Fun Trivia: J : Jack Nicklaus

Special Sub-Topic: You Think You Know Jack? Pt 1

Before age 11, Nicklaus played his first nine holes of golf. What was his score?

    51. In shooting such a respectable score for his first nine ever, Nicklaus showed the first inklings of the height he would eventually rise to.

Nicklaus has won the United States Amatuer title twice. What were the two years that he won?
1959 and 1961. He defeated Charles Coe in the final in 1959 and Dudly Wysong in 1961.

As an amateur in 1960, Nicklaus finished runner-up to Arnold Palmer in the U.S. Open. Still an amateur in 1961, what place did he finish as Billy Casper won the same title?
4th. This was his final year as an amateur. He turned pro later in 1961, and would win the U.S. Open in a playoff with Arnold Palmer the following year.

After Nicklaus turned pro and began to beat the very popular Arnold Palmer regularly, he became unpopular with many golf fans and writers. What politically incorrect nickname was he frequently called by both fans and writers that displayed this sentiment?
Ohio Fats. Nicklaus, who by his own admission was quite overweight, wore unflattering clothes that made him appear much more obese than he was. Since his detractors could not fault his golf, they attacked his appearance to display their displeasure with his talent in defeating Palmer.

After Arnold Palmer nearly accomplished this several times, Nicklaus was the first man to win the Masters in back-to-back seasons. What years did he accomplish this?
1965 and 1966. Nicklaus set a Masters scoring record with 271 in 1965, and won a three man, 18 hole playoff the following year. Nick Faldo was the second man to win consecutive Masters, in 1989 and 1990.

From 1959 to 1983 Nicklaus finished either first or second in at least one major championship every year except one. What year did he fail to do this?
1969. His best showing in a major in 1969 was a sixth place finish at the British Open.

Tiger Woods is the 5th player to win the 'career grand slam' (win all four majors), the others being Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, who is the only one with a 'double slam' (win all four majors more than once). What year did he win his second PGA championship to complete his 'double slam'?
1971. After winning the 1971 PGA, he had at least two of each major championship to his credit. When he won the 1978 British Open, it gave him a 'triple slam', with at least three of each title.

In 1972 Nicklaus took his most serious run at a Grand Slam (all four majors in one year). After winning the Masters and U.S. Open, he entered the final round of the British Open five strokes behind the eventual winner, Lee Trevino. What did Nicklaus shoot in that final round to lose by one?
    66. After letting some opportunities slip away in his final round 66 to lose by one stroke, Nicklaus told reporters, 'I was right there and I let it get away.'

In the 1972 season, Nicklaus shattered the single season money record after winning the Masters, the U.S. Open and five other titles. With this 1972 Masters win, it was his _____ green jacket.
4th. Jack won his first in 1963. Others to follow were in 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, and 1986.

Jack's ultimate goal was to win the Grand Slam (all four majors in one season), but he never won more than two in a single year. How many times did he win two majors in one year?
Five. In 1963 he won the Masters and the PGA, in 1966 he won the Masters and the British Open, in 1972 he won the Masters and the U.S. Open, in 1975 he won the Masters and the PGA, and in 1980 he won the U.S. Open and the PGA.
