Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the ARBA, which of the following poses is used for Californians?

Answer: Commercial

These poses are the Semi-Arch, Full Arch, Compact, Cylindrical, and Commercial. The Californian is Commercial.
2. What would be an automatic disqualification a French Angora according to the ARBA Standard of Perfection?

Answer: Wool less than two inches in length

There is no Angora breed that should have ears less than two inches in length. They would be too short for balance, and would be a fault. The wool of the French Angora is to be relatively coarse compared to others such as the Satin Angora or the English Angora. Mats are annoying and are faulted, but are not a disqualification. They also do not count for density.
3. Which of the following is not a group in the Jersey Woolly according to the ARBA?

Answer: Chinchilla

The groups are Agouti, AOV (Any other variety), Self, Shaded, and Tan Pattern.
4. Smut (dark coloration) anywhere on the usable part of the pelt on a Californian is a fault. (According to the ARBA)

Answer: False

It is not a fault, but a disqualification.
5. Which type of cage is considered to be the ideal for rabbits?

Answer: All-wire cages.

All-wire cages are considered to be the ideal because they are simple in structure, very easily cleaned, they are quite sanitary for regular breeds, and they allow good ventilation. They can also be stacked when used with supports and trays. Carrying cages are just that, for carrying the rabbits.

They are not to be long-term cages. Plastic cages that are solid floored are acceptable, and maybe necessary for breeds like Belgium Hares (they require solid floors), but they require cleaning at least twice a week, they hold fumes, heat, and stale air.

They also cannot be stacked. Chicken wire, wooden framed cages are also acceptable, but the wood can be chewed by rabbits if the cage is not built right. Also, on the edges of the floors where the wire connects the wood, urine and feces can build up, creating a stinky, unsanitary mess.
6. Which of the following is a recommended method for getting rid of ear mites?

Answer: Rubbing olive or mineral oil in the ear.

The oil more or less suffocates the mites, killing them. I really wouldn't recommend any of the other three, and they probably don't even work.
7. Rabbits are rodents.

Answer: False

Contrary to popular belief, they are NOT rodents. They are lagomorphs.
8. What fur type does a Silver Fox have (according to the ARBA)?

Answer: Standing

There are five fur types, being Rollback, Flyback, Angora, Rex, and Standing. The Silver Fox is the only breed with Standing fur.
9. How many eye colors are there in rabbits, and what are they?

Answer: Five, pink, marbled, blue, blue-grey, and brown.

Red is not included, since there is no actual red eye color.
10. Which of the following is not an existent eye color?

Answer: Red

You probably said Marbled, not Red. Well, it's okay because it's kind of confusing if you don't know much about rabbits. There is no "red" eye coloring in rabbits. There's pink, which many people would like to classify as red. Marbled is lighter than brown but darker than blue grey. It has a blue-greyish tinge, but is just darker than blue grey.
11. Growing rabbits should be free-fed as much food as they can eat.

Answer: True

Growing rabbits should be fed all the food they can eat. Also, lactating does should be fed as much as they want. Pregnant does will require more food later in their pregnancy, but regular non-breeding adult rabbits should be fed a limited ration. They should be by no means starved or deprived, but unless they can't keep very good weight or condition, they should be slightly limited on their food. I've never really had a problem with my Californians becoming overweight being free-fed, but that's just my opinion.
12. The gestational period for most rabbit breeds falls in which range?

Answer: 27-31 days

If the doe does not kindle by the 34th day, you should re-breed her immediately if you still want a litter.
13. Which of the following is the most important point in judging meat pens, according to the ARBA?

Answer: Meat type

The order from most important to least is as follows: (1) Meat type (2) Condition (3) Uniformity (4) Fur.
14. Out of the following, which is a disqualification from competition for all breeds, again, according to the ARBA?

Answer: The rabbit shows signs of having a cold.

General faults are: Specimen in molt or otherwise out of condition (but not diseased), hutch stains, stray white hairs in colored fur, poor tail carriage, poor ear carriage, poor eye color, and rabbit is flabby or overly fat. Also, thin and extremely poor flesh condition. Disqualifications for all breeds are as follows: ear canker, slobbers, pot belly, vent disease, abscesses, mange, scurvy condition w. flakes resembling dandruff or scale on the skin or at the base of the fur, infestation w. mites, fleas, or lice, snuffles, tumor or abnormal swelling, rupture or hernia, and abnormal eye discharge.
15. How many varieties does the Cinnamon have, according the the ARBA?

Answer: One

The Cinnamon has just one variety. The Standard of Perfection (2001-2005) states about the color: "Color is to be rust or cinnamon color, with uniform smoke grey ticking across the back. The color is to blend into smoke grey midway on the side and become darker on the belly. The under color is to be orange. Eyes--Brown."
