Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Aphrodite of Milos" (better known as the "Venus de Milo"), is one of this museum's treasures.

Answer: Louvre Museum, Paris

The mutilated masterpiece was discovered in 1820 on the island of Melos (Milo in modern Greek). There is speculation that the mysterious goddess may not be Aphrodite at all, but rather the sea goddess Amphitrite, who was revered on Milo.
2. Edvard Munch painted two versions of "The Scream". In 2004 the second version (1910) and Munch's "Madonna" were stolen from the Munch Museum. Both paintings were recovered in 2006, albeit somewhat damaged. The original version (1893) was itself stolen in 1994 and recovered several months later. Where can it be found?

Answer: National Gallery, Oslo

Munch also created two pastel versions of "The Scream".
3. Johannes Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" is among the famous works housed in this museum.

Answer: Mauritshuis, The Hague

The "Girl with a Pearl Earring" has been called the "Dutch Mona Lisa". The Mauritshuis also has Vermeer's "View of Delft", which Marcel Proust termed "the most beautiful picture in the world" when he first saw it in 1902.
4. Hieronymous Bosch's triptych, "The Garden of Earthly Delights" (or "The Millennium") has been housed in this museum since 1939.

Answer: Museo del Prado, Madrid

Although "The Garden of Earthly Delights" was painted between 1503 and 1504, it later inspired Surrealist painters such as Rene Magritte and Max Ernst.
5. Both Thomas Gainsborough's "The Blue Boy" and Thomas Lawrence's "Sarah Barrett Moulton" (better known as "Pinkie") are part of its permanent collection.

Answer: The Huntington LIbrary, San Marino, California

Hanging opposite one another, the two 18th century portraits are the centerpieces of The Huntington's collection. William Wilson, author of "The Los Angeles Times Book of California Museums", calls them "the Romeo and Juliet of Rococo portraiture."
6. James McNeil Whistler's "Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother" (colloquially known as "Whistler's Mother"), is now owned by this museum.

Answer: Musee d'Orsay, Paris

Whistler's mother, Anna McNeil Whistler, posed for the painting in 1871 while living in London with her son.
7. Vincent van Gogh's "The Starry Night" has been in this museum's permanent collection since 1941.

Answer: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York

Van Gogh painted "The Starry Night" in 1889 while in an asylum at Saint-Remy, where he had committed himself.
8. Caravaggio's "The Taking of Christ" is housed in this gallery.

Answer: National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin

The whereabouts of Caravaggio's c. 1602 masterpiece had been unknown from the late 18th century until it was rediscovered in a Jesuit residence in Dublin, Ireland in 1990. It is the subject of Jonathan Harr's non-fiction book, "The Lost Painting: The Quest for a Caravaggio Masterpiece".
9. Michelangelo's "David" was moved here in 1873 to protect it from damage.

Answer: Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence

Previously, this masterpiece stood in front of the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio on Piazza della Signoria in Florence. A replica was placed there in 1910.
10. There are two versions of the "Virgin of the Rocks" which are largely by Leonardo da Vinci. The earlier work (also known as the "Madonna of the Rocks") is in the Louvre. Where can the second version be found?

Answer: National Gallery, London

The Louvre version figures prominently in Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code". [Note: It hangs in the Grand Gallery, not the Salle des Etats directly across from the "Mona Lisa".]
