Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These quotations are all from "Airplane!", released in 1980. The particular quote I'm looking for was spoken by Lloyd Bridges, who played Steve McCroskey. What'd he say?

Answer: Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

This was the last of a series of statements made by McCroskey about what he quit - drinking, smoking, amphetamines, and sniffing glue. "Surely you can't be serious" was spoken by Robert Hays, who played Ted Striker. "I am serious...and don't call me Shirley" was uttered by Leslie Nielsen, who played Dr. Rumack, in response to Ted Striker's statement. "Flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle" came from Robert Stack, who played Rex Kramer.
2. The next movie is "American Beauty", released in 1999. The character is Carolyn Burnham, played by Annette Bening. What'd she say?

Answer: Honey, don't be weird!

This comes from the real estate party, where Lester is acting out his depression. "You don't get to tell me what to do...ever...again" was spoken by Lester Burnham, played by Kevin Spacey. "You love him, you wanna have, like, ten thousand of his babies" comes from Angela Hayes, who was played by Mena Suvari. "Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it" came from Wes Bentley, who played Ricky Fitts.
3. "Blazing Saddles" is our next movie, released in 1974. We're looking for the quote from the late, great Madeline Kahn, who played Lili von Shtupp, the Teutonic Titwillow. What'd she say?

Answer: Is that a ten-gallon hat, or are you just enjoying the show?

During her stage show, Madeline Kahn makes a few comments to the audience, including this one. "You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers" comes from Gene Wilder, who played The Waco Kid. "My mind is aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening through a cosmic vapor of invention" comes from the mouth of Harvey Korman, who played Hedy...oops, sorry, HEDLEY Lamarr. "OW" was spoken by Lamarr's right hand man, Taggart, as played by Slim Pickens.
4. On to a more serious movie, namely "Braveheart", released in 1995. The character we're looking for this time is Hamish, played by Brendan Gleeson. What'd he say?

Answer: "Well...we didn't get all dressed up for nothin'."

This comes from just before the first major battle scene of the movie, when William Wallace crosses the field to "pick a fight", as he put it. "Every man dies. Not every man truly lives" pretty much sums up the theme of the movie, and was spoken by William Wallace, played by Mel Gibson. "I'm prettier than this man" comes from the Irishman, Stephen, played by David O'Hara. "The trouble with Scotland is that it's full of Scots" was spoken by one of the most evil characters in the history of movies, Edward Longshanks, played to perfection by Patrick McGoohan.
5. "Clue" (1985) is our next movie in question. The character is Wadsworth, played by Tim Curry. What'd he say?

Answer: "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn."

This line comes from one of the three endings of the movie, where Miss Scarlett was revealed to be the killer and Wadsworth turned out to be with the FBI. "I killed Yvette" was spoken by Madeline Kahn, who played Mrs. White. "If I was the killer, I would kill you next" came from Colonel Mustard, played by Martin Mull. "A plant? I thought men like you were usually called a fruit" was spoken by Lesley Ann Warren, who played Miss Scarlett (and, coincidentally, was the one at whom Wadsworth's statement was directed).
6. Our next question is from the 1964 comedy classic "Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb". The character is Colonel "Bat" Guano, played by Keenan Wynn. What'd he say?

Answer: "You wanna know what I think? I think you're some kind of deviated prevert. I think that General Ripper found out about your preversion, and that you were organizing some kind of mutiny of preverts.:

This was said after "Bat" Guano (a great name if I ever heard one) found General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) dead in the bathroom and as he tries to pin it on Captain Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers). And yes, he did say PRE-verts. "Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed" comes from George C. Scott as General "Buck" Turgidson. "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here" was spoken by Peter Sellers as President Merkin Muffley (he played Dr. Strangelove as well). "Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones" issued forth from the mouth of Slim Pickens as Major T.J. "King" Kong.
7. Back to the present, and 1999's "Election". The character is Tracey Flick, played by Reese Witherspoon. What'd she say?

Answer: "It's like my mom always says, 'The weak are always trying to sabatoge the strong."

This is spoken in one of Tracey's narrations, as she explains why Mr. McAllister failed in trying to impede upon her destiny. "Getting suspended is like getting a paid vacation" came from Tammy Metzler, played by Jessica Campbell. "Say that everyday you had an apple" came from Jim McAllister, played by Matthew Broderick, as he tries to convince Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) to enter the election. Paul responds with: "I also like bananas."
8. "Fargo" (1996) is our next movie. Steve Buscemi's Carl Showalter is our subject. What'd he say?

Answer: I'm not gonna debate you, Jerry. I'm not going to sit here and debate."

This was spoken in the restaurant at the beginning of the movie as Carl and Gaer try to understand why in the world Jerry would want to kidnap his own wife. "Ah, hon, ya got Arby's all over me" was spoken by Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson. "But you're saying...what're you saying?" came from Larry Brandenburg as Stan Grossman. "We split the car" came from the monosyllabic Gaer Grimsrud, played by Peter Stormare.
9. Indiana Jones' first adventure, "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" (1981) is next on our list, and the character we'll be using here is Sallah, played by John Rhys-Davies. What'd he say?

Answer: "Asps. Very dangerous. You go first."

In the pit where the Ark lies, the ground seems to be moving. Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes. "You Americans, you're all the same" was spoken by Toht, the evil German played by Ronald Lacey. "You want to talk to God?" was spoken by the hero, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. "What a fitting end to your life's pursuits" came from Paul Freeman as Rene Belloq.
10. 1994 brought "Forrest Gump" and "Pulp Fiction", but we're going to look at "The Shawshank Redemption". Our character is Brooks Hatlen, played by James Whitmore. What'd he say?

Answer: "Maybe I should rob the FoodWay so they'll send me home. I could shoot the manager while I'm at it, kind of like a bonus."

This comes from Brooks' letter to his friends in Shawshank after he's been paroled and has realized that he doesn't belong in the outside world anymore. "Put your trust in the Lord" is part of Warden Norton's welcoming address to the new inmates - he is played by Bob Gunton. "I had to come to prison to be a crook" was spoken by Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne. "Rehabilitated?" is spoken by Morgan Freeman as Ellis "Red" Redding in his third parole hearing.
11. "The Silence Of The Lambs" was released in 1991. Jame Gumb was a character played by Ted Levine. What'd he say?

Answer: "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again."

This is spoken as Jame tries to get Catherine Martin to keep her skin beautiful. "First principles, Clarice" came from Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. "The lambs were screaming" came from Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling. "Look, I am not just some turn-key, Miss Starling" came from Frederick Chilton, played by Anthony Heald. How nice it was for Lecter to have him for dinner at the end of the movie. Oh wait...
12. The greatest mockumentary ever produced, 1984's "This Is Spinal Tap", is our next movie. Christopher Guest plays lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel. What'd he say?

Answer: "I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really."

Nigel is doodling around on the piano, and telling Marty DiBergi (played by Rob Reiner) about it. "Certainly, in the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock" is spoken by Tony Hendra as manager Ian Faith. "As long as there's, you know, sex and drugs, I can do without the rock and roll" is spoken by drummer Mick Shrimpton, played by R.J. Parnell. "I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf" came from Michale McKean as lead singer David St. Hubbins.
13. The groundbreaking live action/animated feature "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", from 1988, is our next selection. Jessica Rabbit, voiced by Kathleen Turner, is our selected character. What'd she say?

Answer: "I ambushed him, hit him in the head with a frying pan and put him in the trunk ... so he wouldn't get hurt."

Jessica is explaining that Roger didn't wimp out on Eddie Valiant. Sounds like spousal abuse to me. "Here's to the pencil pushers" came from Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant. "You see, I didn't know where your office was" came from Roger Rabbit himself, voiced by Charles Fleischer. "Is that a rabbit in your pocket or are you just happy to see me" sort of sounds like something Jessica would say, but was actually spoken by Joanna Cassidy as Dolores.
14. "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory", from 1971, is our next movie. Violet Beauregarde, the constant gum chewer played by Denise Nickerson, is our subject. What'd she say?

Answer: "Spitting's a nasty habit."

Violet says this on the Wonkatania, as she picks her nose. "If she's a lady, then I'm a Vermicious Knid" is spoken by Grandpa Joe, played by Jack Albertson. "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men" comes from the cryptic mouth of Willy Wonka, played by Gene Wilder. "I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday" is, in my opinion, one of the funniest lines in the history of movies, so I had to include it, even if there's no chance it could have been by Violet Beauregard.

It was spoken by David Battley as Mr. Turkentine.
15. Last one already? My how time flies. Well, let's end it with "Young Frankenstein", released in 1974. Our subject is Gene Hackman, who made a brief cameo as the blind man. What'd he say?

Answer: "Wait! Come back! I was gonna make espresso!"

When the monster pays him a visit, the blind man proceeds to spill hot soup in its lap, break its mug, and light its thumb on fire. Can you blame him for leaving? "Could be worse...could be raining" comes from Marty Feldman as Igor (pronounced eye-gore). "A riot is an ugly thing" was spoken by Kenneth Mars as the crazy armed Inspector Kemp. "Yes! Say it! He was my BOYFRIEND!" was from Cloris Leachman as Frau Blucher (whiny). Now, what's gotten into those horses?
