Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fungi gain their energy by photosynthesising, like many other plants. True or false?

Answer: False

Fungi cannot photosynthesise! They have no chlorophyll with which to do this and so they break down living or dead organic matter (ie. leaf litter) with enzymes. In other words, they cause decay, and this helps recycle matter back into the environment.
2. Which one of these is not a fungus?

Answer: Algae

Algae are not fungi. They can photosynthesise and need light in order to live.
3. Some fungus species can glow in the dark. True or false?

Answer: True

This is, indeed, correct. One of the most eerie spectacles you can witness is finding one of these glowing species while out for a night stroll. The glow is caused by enzymes reacting with each other within the fungus, but the purpose for the glow (if there is one) is not yet known by scientists.
4. Is there any real difference between a mushroom and a toadstool?

Answer: No

No, there's no clear difference. Often the edible fungi are referred to as mushrooms while the poisonous and inedible ones are referred to as toadstools, but there is no scientific difference between the two as technically toadstools are mushrooms.
5. Which of these fungus species is not edible by humans?

Answer: Turban Fungus (Gyromitra esculenta)

The Turban Fungus (or False Morel) is extremely poisonous and is often picked mistakenly as the true Morel (which is edible). If in doubt about whether a mushroom species that you have gathered is edible or not, don't eat it!
6. Fungi are neither plants, nor animals.

Answer: True

True. Fungi are definitely not animals, but neither are they plants as they do not photosynthesise. They belong to their own kingdom.
7. Some fungus species can live for hundreds of years.

Answer: True

True. While the parts we see (the mushrooms) may appear, wither and die all within a few days, the underground bodies of many fungi can live and grow for a very long time. Fairy rings (mushroom circles) have circular underground bodies that fruit around the edges.
8. Which of these species of fungus lives in a mutually beneficial relationship with the host it lives on?

Answer: Common Yellow Russula (Russula ochroleuca)

Many species of fungus live in a mutually beneficial relationship with their hosts, however many are parastic and are detrimental to the trees they inhabit, even to the point of killing them.
9. Fungus can grow on animals. True or false?

Answer: True

Ever had a case of Athlete's Foot? Ringworm? Candida? They're all caused by fungal infections. Aquarium fish are very prone to fungal infections if their water conditions are not right.
10. There is a type of fungus that grows underground and is very precious to gourmets. Often pigs and dogs are trained to sniff them out and their owners dig them up to sell as they are quite hard to find and are worth a lot of money! What sort of fungus am I talking about?

Answer: Truffle

Truffles are highly prized by those with gourmet budgets and tastes. They grow underground in a mutually beneficial relationship with trees and are very hard to find and therefore very expensive. It has been said that once you have experienced the taste and aroma of this special fungus, you will never forget it!
