Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are usually the first microcrustacean forms to appear in dry mud cultures?

Answer: Copepods

Look in soil and sand down to a depth of 10 cm, also found in quiet and open waters. Other copepods include the cyclops, eucyclops, limnocalanus and the canthocamptus.
2. These microlife creatures occur in unpasteurized bulk cider vinegar. What are they called?

Answer: Vinegar eels

The vinegar eels feed off of a fungus called "mother of vinegar" in the bottom of the barrels. The fungi and eels work together to convert the alcohol into acetic acid. Vinegar is a solution of 3% to 5% acetic acid.
3. What color is the microfungi penicillium?

Answer: Green to bluish-gray

This is the microfungi that gives roquefort cheese its characteristic flavor and texture. The mold grows on breads and fruit.
4. Tardigrades are also known by what other name?

Answer: Water bears

These microscopic, bear like creatures are anabiotes- they can assume an inactive state during dry periods. They will remain inactive for years until normal moisture conditions return, then they rehydrate themselves and go about their normal activity.
5. The blooms of these protists gives water a watermelon-like taste. What is this microlife called?

Answer: Netrium

All of these are member of the chlorophyta (green protists) order. Look for netrium in quiet waters like lakes and ponds. They are green in color and have a cucumber-shaped cell. They also have two chloroplasts, one in each half of their cell.
6. Amoebas are classified into two sub-classes, what are they?

Answer: Shelled and naked

The shelled amebas (Testacealobusa) and the naked amebas (Gymnamoeba) are best viewed by making a microaquarium, using a stereo or a compound microscope with a 40x power lens.
7. You suspect microscopic grains on a slide that you exposed to the outside air to be pollen. To test this, you place a drop of a sugar solution on the slide with the grains. If this is pollen, what will happen?

Answer: They will grow pollen tubes

To catch pollen, apply a thin coat of oil or petroleum jelly to one side of a microscope slide. Place the slide in the outside air for a few hours. Use a 10% solution of sugar to test the suspected grains. Most pollens will start to form tubes within 10 minutes.
8. This microscopic life makes beautiful glass houses of silica. They are single celled organisms that are one of the most abundant plants on the planet. What are they?

Answer: Diatoms

There are two different groups of diatoms, the pennates which are pen shaped and the centric which are like a cylinder. Diatoms are able to locomote. The pennates are the best movers. You can see them gliding slowly in the direction of the length of the cell.
9. This microscopic life form is transparent and has an elongated body that is pointed at the rear. The mouth is at the base of the neck, which can be extended like the trunk of an elephant. What is this ciliophora called?

Answer: Dileptus

Dileptus are predators, often hiding in leaves and debris. It uses its "trunk" to grab passing rotifers.
10. This monster of the microworld has anywhere from five to eight long tentacles, each armed with stinging cells that surround a mouth large enough to swallow microcrustaceans whole. What is this lifeform called?

Answer: Hydra

Hydras reproduce asexually, changing from male to female in changing environmental conditions (temperature, levels of CO2, photoperiod and pollution.)
