Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song is heard second in the musical "Anything Goes"?

Answer: Bon Voyage

"Bon Voyage" is a short song, but a fun one to sing. It is also a full chorus number, along with all of the leads, where as many of the songs with leads do not include all of the lead characters.
2. On which day and year did "Anything Goes" open at the Alvin Theater, New York?

Answer: November 21, 1934

"Anything Goes" also turned out to be the fourth longest running musical of the 1930s.
3. The musical "Anything Goes" had to be rewritten because of a high seas disaster.

Answer: True

Over 125 people died on the S.S. Morro Castle right around the beginning of rehersals. The script was changed due to this event.
4. What are the last words of the musical "Anything Goes"?

Answer: Anything Goes

In the end of the reprise version of "Anything Goes", it is sung by the entire cast.

"And though I'm not a great romancer, I know that you're bound to answer when I propose ANYTHING GOES!"
5. In "Anything Goes" what does Moony say after Bonnie Says "The violin fix the violin!"

Answer: I'm scared to death of this thing

Since Moony is a mobster, he cannot go on a 'boat' with a gun wide out in the open, so that means he needs to go undercover, and in this case, he was a priest with a violin.. go figure!
6. What is the name of the ship in "Anything Goes"?

Answer: S.S. American

In the song Public Enemy Number One, sung by the chorus the words sung are the following:

"Thank thee heartily loyal man
For saving the liner AMERICAN."

Referring to Snake Eyes Johnson, Public Enemy Number One, one of the largest parts in the play, yet he is never seen.
7. Can you fill in the blank for in this line from the "Anything Goes" song, "Blow, Gabriel, Blow"? "Oh, I was _________ Gabriel ________."

Answer: low

Said in "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" during the church scene on the boat, right after Moony is escorted to the prison with Billy because they revealed that they were not a minister or Snake Eyes.
The song line goes:
"Oh, I was low Gabriel, low.
Mighty low, Gabriel, low." Tricky :)
8. Which of the following has never been a song in "Anything Goes"?

Answer: Be Like the Blackbird

Although the songs are in the other versions of the play for the real Broadway stage, they are usually not included in high school versions. The actual title of the song is "Be Like the Bluebird", not 'the Blackbird'.
9. In "Anything Goes", who was the song "I Get a Kick Out You" directed to?

Answer: Lord Evelyn Oakleigh

Frank Sinatra sang this song too, as many people know, although he changed some of the lyrics so as to avoid the mention of cocaine. In the play, Reno Sweeney sings it about Evelyn Oakleigh.
10. In "Anything Goes" who is the main character?

Answer: Reno Sweeny

Although the others are leads, Reno is in most cases the 'main' lead in this musical. She appears in every song except for "Be Like the Bluebird", "Heaven Hop", and "It's Delovely".
11. In "Anything Goes", which character said the following: "I'm not even public enemy 13 anymore!"?

Answer: Moony

He was upset because he was made a fool of in front of the entire ship, and got his gun taken away from him by the Purser and the Captain. He screamed like a baby for Bonnie, one of the last true lines in the musical to which Bonnie replies, "That doesn't matter Moony" and then starts singing "You're the Top".
12. What is the main form of dance in the musical "Anything Goes"?

Answer: Tap

Tap is used in the songs "Friendship", "The Heaven Hop", "Blow, Gabriel, Blow", and of course the biggest tap number of all, "Anything Goes"!
13. In "Anything Goes" which three characters sing in "Friendship"?

Answer: Reno, Billy, and Moonface

They sing it randomly about keeping the big secret that Billy should not be on the boat, and he is not really Snake Eyes Johnson, and in order to keep Moonface Martin a secret. It is a song reflecting on their friendship, hence the name of the song.
14. Who composed the score for "Anything Goes"?

Answer: Cole Porter

Cole Porter also wrote much of the story, he did such a wonderful job. The music in the play is great and sometimes difficult to sing and/or play. He made the songs "I Get a Kick out of You", "Friendship", and "Anything Goes" famous. Sorry it was not Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald, it was good old Cole Porter!
15. Which of the following is not an angel in "Anything Goes"?

Answer: Hope

Hope is actually another member in the musical, she is a main lead, the love interest of Billy, and the fiancée of Evelyn - not a good love triangle. The four names do seem to fit together however. The actual names for the angels are Charity, Chastity, Virtue, and Purity.
