"Anything Goes" - Beaumont Version Quiz

My school is currently doing this version of "Anything Goes", so I thought I'd make a quiz on it. Questions with quotes are based off of the Beaumont script, not a specific performance. Enjoy.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Billy's disguise at the beginning of "De-lovely"?

Answer: Old lady in a wheelchair

"De-lovely" is a duet between Billy and Hope. Billy removes his costume throughout the first verse. The two kiss at the conclusion of the song.
2. How many different foods and drinks are mentioned in "You're the Top"?

Answer: seven

They are:
Napoleon Brandy, a turkey dinner, Camembert, tamale, Ovaltine, Waldorf salad and broccoli.
"You're the Top" is a duet between Reno and Billy.
3. What unpremeditated activity did Lord Evelyn Oakleigh participate in with Plum Blossom?

Answer: A romp in the rice

He confesses to this before Reno sings "Blow, Gabriel Blow". This confession has a strong link to the ending of the performance.
4. What is the name of the minister arrested by the F.B.I.?

Answer: Henry T. Dobson

The F.B.I. are looking for Moon, but Billy inadvertently directs them to the minister. He is known as a bishop in other versions.
5. Who sings the following line, and what song is it from? "We'd be so grand at the game, So carefree together that it does seem a shame"

Answer: Billy; "Easy to Love"

This song involves Billy expressing his affection for Hope, claiming that his love for her isn't his fault, because she'd be "so easy to love".
6. When Billy and Moon are being held in the ship's brig, Erma brings Billy a note from Hope. What does it say?

Answer: Dearest darling. I love you so but what good does love do when there is no hope? Love, Hope.

This note prompts the distant duet "All Through The Night".
Billy sings from the ship's brig, Hope from the deck of the ship, in a beautiful duet. The quartet of sailors join to sing the final part of the song.
7. A scripted kiss occurs between Reno Sweeney and Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. True or false?

Answer: False

Interestingly, a kiss between these two characters is not scripted, even though the two marry at the end. Many directors, however, choose to end the dance routine to the comical "Gypsy in Me" with a kiss as the lights fade. The actual script merely states that they fall into each others arms.
8. Billy and Moon seek to convince Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt that Evelyn is, in fact, an impostor, and that Billy is the real Evelyn. What does Moon claim is Evelyn's real name, before it was "changed"?

Answer: Mona

In a bizarre lie, Billy tells Mrs. Harcourt that Evelyn is actually his brother, Edna, and that Billy is the real Evelyn. However, Moon interjects that "his real name's Mona but he changed it".
9. Who told Moon, "Remember, it's always darkest just before they turn on the lights"?

Answer: Dillinger

This is the only reference to Dillinger. This line precedes Moon's solo song "Be Like the Blue Bird", a comical number aimed at cheering up Billy.
10. Which of Reno's Angels "marries" Moon?

Answer: Virtue

The script lists the Angel as "Angel #4"; however, we know it's Virtue, because in Act I scene II, Reno introduces each Angel by name. Moon performs the "wedding" himself, under the guise of being a minister, and Reno scares him into thinking it might be legally binding.
11. What is the name of the channel swimmer the captain points out as she swims by?

Answer: Gertrude Ederle

The passengers are disappointed at the lack of celebrity presence on the S.S. American. The passengers get excited when they think she's on the ship, but the captain humorously points her out in the ocean. Gertrude Ederle became the first female to swim across the English Channel in 1926.
12. The captain received a radiogram informing him that "Mr. Murray Hill Flowers" is actually Snake Eyes Johnson. Where in America did the radiogram come from?

Answer: Washington

The passport and ticket with the name Murray Hill Flowers on it was intended to be used by Public Enemy Number 1, Snake Eyes Johnson. However, when he fails to make it onto the ship, Moon and Erma give them to Billy.
13. In the song "Anything Goes", what line follows "If low bars you like"

Answer: If old hymns you like

The passage from the song goes:

"If driving fast cars you like,
If low bars you like,
If old hymns you like,
If bare limbs you like,
If Mae West you like,
Or me undressed you like,
Why, nobody will oppose."
14. In how many songs is Mae West mentioned?

Answer: two

Mae West, born Mary Jane West, who also used the alias Jane Mast, was born in New York in 1893. She is mentioned in "Anything Goes" - "If Mae West you like, or me undressed you like" - and in "You're the Top" - "You're the moon over Mae West's shoulder".
15. Other girls' luxuries are whose necessities?

Answer: Erma's

This comes from a line in the song "Buddie, Beware", sung by Erma.
"Other girls' luxuries are my necessities, so buddie, beware"
The point of this song is for Erma to tell the sailors who are chasing her, wishing to marry her, why she would be no good to be married to. Basically, she outlines her possessive, manipulative and controlling nature to discourage marriage.
