You Can Do Analogies! Trivia Quiz

Analogy: A big word with a fun meaning. Analogies are all about figuring out how things go together or are related. Think: THIS is to THAT as WHAT is to WHICH? Like this: CAT is to KITTEN as DOG is to PUPPY. The second words are the young of the first.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SNOW is to SKY as LAVA is to what?

Answer: VOLCANO

Snow comes from the sky, and lava comes from a volcano. If we write this out in "analogy language", it looks like this:
Snow:Sky::Lava:Volcano and we read it: "Snow is to Sky as Lava is to Volcano".
2. BLANKET is to BED as PICTURE is to what?

Answer: WALL

Blanket:Bed::Picture:Wall
Your blanket is ON your bed, and a picture is ON your wall. Uh oh! Did you pick house or camera? Pictures can be IN those, but blankets aren't IN beds, so WALL is the best answer. Other good answers for this question might be CANVAS, or REFRIGERATOR! Can you think of some others?
3. CHEESE is to SANDWICH as LEG is to what?

Answer: PIANO

Cheese:Sandwich::Leg:Piano
Cheese is part of a sandwich like a leg is part of a piano. Tablecloths, fences, and Easter don't have legs!
4. EMERALD is to LIME as DARK PURPLE is to what?

Answer: VIOLET

Emerald:Lime::Dark Purple:Violet
Emerald is a dark green color, and lime is a light green. Therefore, we are looking for a light purple to go opposite our dark purple. The only word on the list that means "light purple" is VIOLET. VERDIGRIS is a color too, but it is a sort of grayish-green. Cool word, isn't it?
5. SPANISH is to SPAIN as WELSH is to what?

Answer: WALES

Spanish:Spain::Welsh:Wales
Spanish is the language of the country of Spain, so you know you are probably looking for a country where the people speak Welsh. That would be Wales. What language do people speak in Australia? How about Russia?
6. PLANETS are to TELESCOPE as BACTERIA are to what?

Answer: MICROSCOPE

Planets:Telescope::Bacteria:Microscope
We look at planets through a telescope and bacteria (germs) through a microscope.
7. Ready for a fill in the blank analogy? Here it comes! You can do it! TIGER is to STRIPES as LEOPARD is to what?

Answer: SPOTS

Tiger:Stripes::Leopard:Spots
Did you get it? Tigers have stripes, and leopards have spots.
8. ALICE is to WONDERLAND as HARRY POTTER is to what?

Answer: HOGWARTS

Alice:Wonderland::Harry Potter:Hogwarts
Alice went to Wonderland (the full title of the book is "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland") and Harry Potter went to Hogwarts. Even though Wonderland is not a school, it is still the best answer because it is a place the character visits.
9. PLAYHOUSE is to MANSION as BRUSSELS SPROUTS are to what?

Answer: CABBAGES

Playhouse:Mansion::Brussels Sprouts:Cabbages
Did you get this one? A playhouse is a little house, while a mansion is a big house. Brussels sprouts are little vegetables (yum!) and cabbages are big ones...plus which, Brussels sprouts LOOK like little cabbages!
By the way, Carmen Miranda was an old-time movie actress who used to dance around with fruit on her head. Weird, huh? I don't think she ever wore Brussels sprouts, though.
10. STUDYING is to TEST as what is to WEDDING?

Answer: ENGAGEMENT

Studying:Test::Engagement:Wedding
You study before a test, and you get engaged before you have a wedding. I know you couldn't study for this test, but i hope you enjoyed these analogies! Why not try writing some of your own?
