Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of Mass, the priest, deacon and subdeacon (or priest and server) recite alternatively a Psalm. Which Psalm is this?

Answer: Psalm 42

Psalm 42, commonly called the "Judica me, Deus" is always recited at the beginning of Mass except in Requiem (funeral) Masses and during Passiontide. It expresses most fittingly our joy and confidence in God.
2. The first Sign of the Cross during Mass is made at the first words: "In nomine Patris, et Filii,+ et Spiritus Sancti. Amen." When is the second Sign of the Cross normally made?

Answer: At the "Adjutorium nostrum + in nomine Domini"

"Adjutorium nostrum + in nomine Domini" means "Our help is in the name of the Lord". The priest signs himself for the second time during this strong statement of faith.
3. What does the priest do from the "Deus, tu conversus vivificabis nos" to the "Et clamor meus ad te veniat"?

Answer: He bows

The priest, having just offered the Indulgentiam, bows low to express his and our petition for the remission of our sins.
4. Where is the Sign of the Cross made during the Introit at Requiem Masses?

Answer: Over the Missale

Fewer Signs of the Cross are made on the priest and in blessing to the people during Requiem Masses so as to afford all possible graces to the soul whom the Mass is being offered for.
5. What are the first words said during the Offertory for the offering of the host?

Answer: Suscipe, sancte Pater

"Suscipe, sancte Pater" are the beginning words for the offering of the host which goes: "Accept, O Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, this spotless host, which I, Thy unworthy servant, offer to Thee, to atone for my numberless sins, offenses, and negligences; on behalf of all here present and likewise for all faithful Christians living and dead, that it may profit me and them as a means of salvation to life everlasting. Amen."
6. In the pre-1955 rubrics for Holy Week, what color are the vestments that the priest wears during the actual Mass of the Pre-Sanctified on Good Friday?

Answer: Black

Prior to the reforms of Holy Week by Pope Pius XII, the priest wore only black on Good Friday. After the reforms were implemented, the priest was instructed to changed into purple Mass vestments after the unveiling of the Cross.
7. During the "Supplices te rogamus...", there are several things the priest does. Which of the following is NOT done

He bows low during this prayer, but does not genuflect. He wont genuflect again until the uncovering of the chalice at the Minor Elevation.
8. How many crosses are made with the Host during the Minor Elevation?

Answer: Five

First there are three made over the chalice: "Per ip + sum, et cum ip + so, et in ip +so," and then two between the chalice and the priest: "est tibi Deo Patri + omnipotenti, in unitate Spiritus + Sancti, omnis honor et gloria."
9. At the end of the Pater Noster (the Our Father), who says the "Amen" and how does he say it?

Answer: The priest, silently

The priest prays the Our Father up until "and lead us not into temptation" to which the server responds, "But deliver us from evil." and the priest, inaudibly, answers "Amen."
10. While the priest is reciting the Agnus Dei, what must he do?

Answer: Strikes his breast

Three times he strikes his breast, once for each "Agnus Dei".
