Fun Trivia : Quizzes : Cities of the World : World Cities: As The Crow Flies

Introduction:
"Each question in this quiz asks you to look at four pairs of famous cities from around the world and tell which pair is separated by the longest great circle distance. Only one answer will be a close call. I hope it is easier to play than it was to make"

1. Which pair of the following cities are the farthest apart? Even though the questions are written for a little variety, all ask for the FARTHEST distance. Knowing where these cities are is part of the quiz, but states or countries will be provided here and there for clarity.
    Algiers and Amsterdam
    Alice Springs and Anchorage
    Albuquerque and Andorra
    Amarillo, Texas and Asuncion, Paraguay

2. Again, which pair of cities are the farthest apart, traveling along a great circle (the shortest distance possible)? Think of a great circle as a plane intersecting the earth and passing through its center.
    Beijing and Beirut
    Butte, Montana and Bogota
    Boston and Brussels
    Bangkok and Bangor, Maine

3. Four more pairs of cities. Which are farthest apart?
    Cleveland and Caracas
    Chicago and Capetown
    Copenhagen and Carlsbad, NM
    Canton, China and Cairo, Egypt

4. The proverbial crow has to fly the farthest between which two cities?
    Dallas and Damascus
    Detroit and Dar es Salaam
    Denver and Dublin
Douglas, Isle of Man and Djibouti

5. Bees take a direct route from their hives to their food source, too. Which is the longest great circle beeline between these four pairs of cities?
Grand Junction, CO and Georgetown, Guyana
    Gabarone, Botswana and Gibraltar
    Hamburg and Honolulu
    Glasgow and Guatemala City

6. Flying the same kind of airplane at the same speed, say 500 MPH, which trip along a great circle route would take the longest between the named cities? You may safely disregard winds, etc.
    Helsinki and Havana
    Houston and Hong Kong
    Hanoi and Harare, Zimbabwe
    Hammerfest, Norway and Hamilton, Bermuda

7. Which of these pairs of cities are the farthest apart?
    Kuwait City and Kinshasa
    Kathmandu and Khartoum
    Kabul and Kansas City
    Kuala Lumpur and Kiev

8. Unless they are exactly opposite one another, there is only one great circle (also known as a geodesic circle) connecting any two points on the earth's surface. Here are four more pairs of cities. Which are farthest apart?
    Minneapolis and Monaco
    Madrid and Miami
    Mexico City and Manila
    Mecca and Moscow

9. Which of these four pairs of cities lie the greatest distance from one another along a great circle route?
    Perth, Australia and Phoenix
    Portland, OR and Paris
    Prague and Panama City
    Pretoria and Phnom Penh

10. Finally, since I live in Northern California, I am looking for the farthest city of the following four from San Francisco. This is a close one
    Tashkent
    Amman
    Sydney
    Lhasa
