Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What university became the 12th member of the ACC in 2005?

Answer: Boston College

The ACC created quite a stir when three members of the Big East Conference bolted for the ACC. Miami and Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2004. Boston College had to wait an extra year due to certain legal issues and became the 12th member of the ACC for the 2005 football season. Syracuse was also involved in talks to join the ACC (rather than Virginia Tech), but the University of Virginia would not approve the three team expansion unless Virginia Tech was included.
2. Which one of the following schools was not a charter member (1953) of the ACC?

Answer: Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech was a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. Tech left the SEC in 1967 in a dispute over the number of scholarhips allowed. The school regretted the decision when scholarships were made the same for all NCAA schools and conference membership became more financially important. Luckily, the ACC accepted Ga. Tech in 1979.

It was the first expansion for the league since Virginia joined in 1953.
3. How many charter members formed the ACC in 1953?

Answer: 7

The conference was founded on May 8, 1953, with Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest.
4. Which one of the following schools did not join the ACC after leaving the Big East Conference?

Answer: Florida State

The Big East sued the ACC over this three-team defection. The matter was settled out of court with payments to other Big East teams and agreed upon future games. Five new schools subsequently joined the Big East: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.
5. Why did South Carolina leave the ACC in 1971?

Answer: Improve chances of a NCAA basketball tournament bid

Prior to the NCAA basketball tournament expansion from 16 to 64 teams, only the ACC tournament champion received a bid. South Carolina had won several regular season championships but lost the tournament. The Gamecocks left the league to improve its chances to enter the tournament as an independent. South Carolina later regretted the move and joined the SEC in 1992.
6. In the 52-year history of the ACC through 2004, Clemson and Maryland were the only charter members of the ACC to win a generally recognized Division 1 football championship?

Answer: True

Maryland won the 1953 AP and UPI titles in the ACC's first year. Clemson won the AP and UPI in 1981. Other non-charter members have won the championship since 1952 including Georgia Tech (1990), Florida State (1993, 1999), and Miami as a non-member (1983, 1987,1989, 1991, and 2001).
7. In 2002, all but two of the ACC teams went to a football bowl game. Which teams did not go bowling?

Answer: North Carolina and Duke

Clemson was in the Tangerine Bowl, Virginia in the Continental Tire Bowl, Wake Forest in the Seattle Bowl, Georgia Tech in the Silicon Valley Bowl, North Carolina State in the Gator Bowl, Florida State in the Sugar Bowl, and Maryland in the Peach Bowl. Future ACC members Virginia Tech, Miami, and Boston College also went bowling. Remarkably, 10 of the 12 members had gone bowling by 2002.
8. What were the ACC division names for the 2005 football season?

Answer: Atlantic and Coastal

Florida State, Boston College, Maryland, Clemson, Wake Forest, and North Carolina State made up the Atlantic Division. Virginia, Virginia Tech, Miami, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Duke made up the Coastal Division. There was no geographic consideration to the split.
9. Duke and North Carolina have won many NCAA men's basketball championships since 1953. Which one of the following other ACC schools won multiple NCAA men's basketball championships in the second half of the 20th century?

Answer: North Carolina State

North Carolina State won the championship in 1974 behind David Thompson and Tom Burleson. The win interrupted the UCLA streak of nine championships in 10 years. The Jimmy Valvano coached Wolfpack also and won the 1983 championship upsetting Houston on a last second shot.
10. Which of the following athletes did not play a sport at one of the twelve 2005 schools in the ACC?

Answer: Johnny Unitas, Football

Michael Jordan played basketball for North Carolina including the 1982 championship season. Nomar Garciaparra played in the College World Series for Georgia Tech in 1994. Arnold Palmer played golf at Wake Forest. (The ACC did not exist when Arnie played, but the question is about the school) Unitas played football at the University of Lousiville.
