Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sam is 11 years old and wants to join a saddle club. The rules of the saddle club says riders under 13 must ride a horse under 14.2 hands. Which of these horses would she choose?

Answer: Connemara

The Connemara is a pony, or shorter than 14.3 h. The Jutland is much taller than 14.2 h, it's a draft horse and stands 15.3 h. Aztecas can be close to a pony size, but are a bit taller and can get up to 15.2 h. And finally the Gelderlander is between 15.2 h and 16.2 h.
2. Tom wants a flashy show horse. He really likes color and wants a horse that isn't just "plain old brown". What breed *shouldn't* he get?

Answer: Suffolk Punch

The Pony of America and Knabstrup are all Appaloosa colored with small spots all over or just on the rump. The Paint has bigger spots that are arranged in all different patterns. The Suffolk Punch isn't a colored horse and it wouldn't be the best choice as a show horse.
3. Sally's found four horses that are the fastest of their breed, however she can't decide which one to pick. She only wants them to run for short spurts. If she was going to race, which horse should she choose?

Answer: Quarter Horse

Although the Thoroughbred is the fastest horse in mile long races and Arabians can keep going for long distances, the Quarter Horse can outrun them both in a short distance race, a quarter of a mile, hence the breed's name. Java is a pony that I just put in as filler.
4. Paul wants a horse to help him plant his field. He needs a strong draft horse to pull his plow. Which horse should he choose?

Answer: Normandy Cob

The Irish Draft, Irish Hunter, and Latvian Harness Horse are riding horses. The Irish Draft and Latvian Harness Horse are sometimes categorized under draft, but they aren't built as well for pulling a plow as for riding. The Normandy Cob is a big draft horse.
5. Doug wants a horse from a certain country. He just finished a report on India and now wants a horse from there. Which horse does he want?

Answer: Indian Half-Bred

This one should be easy if you don't over think it. The Brumby is from Australia. The Zemaituka is from Lithuania and the Konik is from Poland.
6. Allie wants to get a horse, but she doesn't want one that has come from the wild. Which horse should she chose?

Answer: Pleven

Brumbys are wild horses from Australia. Mustangs are wild horses from the U.S. and the Prezewalski are wild horses from Asia.
7. Matt wants an old breed of horse. He wants to find the oldest breed he can. Which one of these breeds should he choose?

Answer: Persian Arab

Although they are all old breeds the Persian Arab is older than all of the other breeds. It is older than the Arabian by about 1500 years.
8. Ken wants an all black horse. He wants it to be showy and at least 15 h. Which horse should he choose?

Answer: Friesian

Although the Lipizzaner and Cleveland Bay are showy and at least 15 h, they aren't black. The Ariegeois is always black, but is a pony.
9. Tammy wants a horse with a name of a state in the breed's name. Which state could she not find?

Answer: Texas

Colorado Ranger, Tennessee Walking Horse, and Florida Cracker are all horses with states in their names.
10. Mandy wants a horse that is originally from the U.S. Which horse would she choose?

Answer: Morab

The Cleveland Bay is from Britain, the Holstein is from Germany, and the Clydesdale is from Scotland. The Morab is the cross between the Morgan, originally from the U.S., and the Arabian, originally from the Middle East.
