Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, a popular scientist from Australia, conducted a navel lint survey in 2001, studying 5000 people. What prize was he awarded in 2002 for this scientific study?

Answer: Ig Nobel Prize

Dr Karl won the Ig Nobel Prize in 2002, a prize that pokes fun at the Nobel Prize and the obscure research that scientists undertake. He received his prize at the official ceremony at Harvard University in Boston, USA.
Dr Karl's research surveyed 5000 people, including 182 people who shaved their stomach hair to observe any difference in the amount of navel lint.
2. Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, a popular scientist from Australia, conducted a navel lint survey in 2001, studying 5000 people. His study showed that your physical build can increase the amount of lint that collects in your navel. What physical feature is LEAST likely to increase your navel fluff?

Answer: An 'outie' belly button

An 'outie' belly button provides a convex suface where the lint finds it difficult to collect, whilst the 'innie' belly button provides a nice space for the lint to accumulate. Having a hairy stomach or being chubby helps to channel the clothing fibres into your navel; being male and older also increases the collection of navel lint.
3. What does navel lint mainly consist of?

Answer: Clothing fibres

Navel lint is mainly the accumulation of clothing fibres mixed with some dead skin cells and hair. Dr Karl Kruszelnicki's study of navel lint showed that it gathered, due to body movement, from clothing worn on the bottom half of the body ie your undies.
4. Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, a popular scientist from Australia, conducted a navel lint survey in 2001, studying 5000 people. His study also examined the colour of navel fluff; what did the study show was the most prevalent colour of navel fluff?

Answer: Blue

The study showed that the prevalent colour for navel fluff was blue. The likely reason for the blue colour is that a lot of clothing contains blue fibres and a large number of people wear blue clothing.
However, there were also people who had navel fluff that was not blue and which also did not match their clothing colours. Some things are still a mystery...
5. If you were on a study trip around the world researching navel lint and you were in the Netherlands, what is the Dutch word you would use to describe navel lint?

Answer: Buikpluisjes

The Dutch word is from the combination of 'buik = tummy' and 'pluisjes = fluff'. If you are ever travelling in the Netherlands, wanting to start a conversation with a local, this bit of information will be very useful and will impress everyone with your knowledge of interesting topics...
6. Travelling to the Flemish part of Belgium, you may want to catch up with the contemporary local artist who has has created art works out of navel lint. What is his name?

Answer: Luk Stallaert

The artist Luk Stallaert has created an art work of framed navel lint called 'Buikpluisjes'. He had his first exhibition in Brussels and he ensures all his art works contain 'microbes'. Unfortunately, I don't know if his navel fluff art work is on exhibition in any gallery.
7. Navel lint has been referred to in literature, albeit very rarely. What novel by the English author, Louis De Bernieres, contains a reference to navel lint?

Answer: The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman

In the book, 'The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman', the character of Don Emmanuel refers to navel lint and asks why it is always blue.
8. Graham Barker of Western Australia is in the Guinesss Book of Records for the largest collection of his own navel fluff (collecting some one else's would be just too weird). Whilst holidaying in which Australian city, did he begin his collection?

Answer: Brisbane

Graham Barker records on his website that he began his collection in Brisbane whilst staying in a backpacker hostel on holidays. Whilst lazing about he started navel gazing and so began a lifelong hobby...
9. The amount of navel lint that accumulates per day varies for each person. How much navel fluff in milligrams (mg) does Graham Barker, the Guinness Book record holder, advise that he collects on average each day from his belly button?

Answer: 3.03 mgs

Graham Barker has been collecting navel lint since he started in 1984 and his estimate is that he collects 3.03mg per day. He stores his navel lint in glass jars that are date labelled and each holds five/six years of his collected lint.
10. When someone describes an event as 'It's as interesting as navel lint' what do they really mean?

Answer: It's boring

People use this phrase to indicate that something is very, very boring, in fact, about the most boring you can get. However, given all the fascinating information about navel lint in this quiz, perhaps the meaning should be redefined...
