The Pretenders: Songs and Lyrics Quiz

This quiz covers the songs and song lyrics of one of my favorite bands, The Pretenders. Almost all of these songs got radio airplay in both the U.S. and U.K., and most were on the charts in both countries.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Kinks song did the Pretenders record?

Answer: Stop Your Sobbing

Chrissie Hynde is a huge Kinks fan and was involved in a relationship with Ray Davies of the Kinks. They have a daughter named Natalie Rae.

The Pretenders recorded a cover of the Jimi Hendrix song "Roomful of Mirrors" later in their career.
2. What song has a chorus that contains the line "I'm special, so special"?

Answer: Brass in Pocket

The song title "Brass in Pocket" comes from the first line of the first verse rather than the chorus. Though the song came out in 1980, it's still popular today. In the 2003 film "Lost in Translation", there is a scene of Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson performing this song in a Japanese karaoke room.
3. What was the name of the Christmas-themed song recorded by the Pretenders?

Answer: 2000 Miles

The song "2000 Miles" was the first single released off the "Learning to Crawl" album in 1983. It was a hit in the U.K. It gets seasonal radio play in the U.S. since it is considered to be a Christmas song.

While researching this quiz, I learned that Coldplay and KT Tunstall have both covered this song.
4. What, Pretenders ballad from the 1990s has a video of Chrissie Hynde caring for a sick, depressed man?

Answer: I'll Stand by You

Both "I'll Stand by You" and "Night in My Veins" were singles off the 1994 album "Last of the Independents". "Night" was the first single released, but the second single, "Stand", did much better. The romantic lyrics and the theme of loyalty obviously struck a chord with a lot of fans.

The song "Human" (a Divinyls cover) is a more recent single - off the 1999 album "Viva el Amor". The song was released as a single in the U.K. but not in the U.S.

"My Baby" was released in 1987.
5. Which Pretenders song is about Chrissy Hynde's hometown?

Answer: My City Was Gone

"I went back to Ohio and my city was gone", sings Chrissy Hynde in the first verse. The song is called "My City Was Gone" and was originally on the B-side of the single "Back on the Chain Gang". Both of those songs appeared on the 1983 album, "Learning to Crawl".

The lyrics are about the rampant pollution and development in Ohio (and, by extension, other places in the world) that are destroying formerly beautiful green spaces.
6. In the lyrics to "Middle of the Road", which of the following things does one NOT find in the middle of the road?

Answer: a traffic accident

"Middle of the Road" was a single off the 1983 album, "Learning to Crawl". Chrissy Hynde uses the metaphor of a road to describe her chaotic life.
7. Now let's try a fill-in-the blank! The following verse is from "Back on the Chain Gang". "A circumstance beyond our control, (oh oh oh oh oh oh oh) The phone, the TV and the News of the World Got in the house like a pigeon from ___________"

Answer: hell

"Back on the Chain Gang" was supposedly written about either Chrissie Hynde's lover Ray Davies or about James Honeyman-Scott, the Pretenders guitarist who died of a drug overdose in 1982. The song makes references to Sam Cooke's 1960s hit song "Chain Gang".
8. What is the next line of this verse? "Don't get me wrong If I'm acting so distracted I'm thinking about the fireworks ___________________________"

Answer: That go off when you smile

These lyrics are from the song "Don't Get Me Wrong", released in 1986. It's from the album "Get Close".
9. Which song(s) appear(s) on the soundtrack of the film "The Living Daylights"?

Answer: Both of these

Both of these songs were on the soundtrack of this James Bond movie, which came out in 1987.
10. What is the name of the song that contains these lyrics? "Was a time wanted you for mine Nobody knew You arrived like a day And passed like a cloud I made a wish, I said it out loud Out loud in a crowd Everybody heard 'Twas the talk of the town"

Answer: Talk of the Town

This song came out in 1980. It was on the "Pretenders II" album and also on an EP. It is my personal favorite.
