With all of the clues and advice given by both holotapes and people, the player headed to Vault 112 where James also was. There, inside a simulation pod was a 1950s-esque simulation. When the player decided to go into one of the simulation pods, he was transformed into a little kid. Trying to locate James seemed all but hopeless. Alas, the leader of the vault turned the player's father into a certain creature. What did James get turned into, during the simulation?

After accompanying James and the science team to the Jefferson Memorial, "Project Purity" was ready to begin. While the player was activating a far away switch, the Enclave attacked the project. James was confronted by Colonel Autumn. Did James die during the events of that scripted encounter?
After escaping from the pursuit of the Enclave and finding sanctuary with the Brotherhood of Steel, the player was sent to Vault 87 to figure out the origin of the Super Mutants and to retrieve the GECK. After getting help from a friendly Super-Mutant named Fawkes, the player retrieved the GECK to power the Brotherhood of Steel's robot.
