Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the loganberry originate?

Answer: United States

A loganberry is a cross between a raspberry and a blackberry. It was first cultivated by James Logan way back in 1881. Logan was from Santa Cruz, California.
2. "Fresa" is the Spanish word for what fruit?

Answer: strawberry

Strawberries are good for your health. They contain antioxidants and are a great source of Vitamin C. Just don't overdo that lovely clotted cream that goes so well with them.
3. In the 1946 film "My Darling Clementine", who played the character Wyatt Earp?

Answer: Henry Fonda

"My Darling Clementine" was directed by John Ford. There were actually five Earp brothers, but only four were portrayed in the film.

The Clementine is a citrus fruit.
4. In Greek mythology, Persephone was tricked by Hades into eating the seeds of which fruit?

Answer: Pomegranate

The pomegranate is also known as the Chinese apple. It is a berry and has over 500 seeds. Legend has it that Cleopatra used pomegranate seeds to colour her lips!
5. Which type of apple is featured on the Apple Records label?

Answer: Granny Smith

Apple Records was set up by the Beatles in the late 1960s. It is headquartered in the UK.

Incorrect choices: Many people think that Granny Smith apples originated from the UK, when in fact they came from Australia. Pink Lady apples also originated in Australia. Golden Delicious apples, on the other hand, were first cultivated in the USA. Finally, Braeburn apples come from New Zealand.
6. What kind of "fruity" beret did Prince and the Revolution sing about in 1985?

Answer: Raspberry

Prince changed his name to a symbol from 1993-2000, and was referred to as "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince". His song "Raspberry Beret" was a big hit in 1985.

Raspberries, like many other berries, are known for their healthful properties. Raspberry leaf tea is said to help speed a woman's labour and delivery along if drunk in the final weeks of pregnancy.
7. Where does the band called The Cranberries come from?

Answer: Ireland

The band is from Limerick in Ireland. They formed in 1989. Band members include Dolores O'Riordan, Noel Hogan, Michael Hogan, and Fergal Lawler.

Cranberries are often made into juices, dressing, and sauce.
8. Cherries are my favourite fruit, but the pits contain a small amount of what?

Answer: Cyanide

Ricin is made from the castor beans, which can be fatal in small amounts. Digitalis is derived from foxgloves, also fatal in small amounts. Sambucus is the elderberry and can be fatal in little doses as well.

The small amount of cyanide in cherry pits pale in comparison really!
9. The origin of the name banana is uncertain, but one theory has it stemming from the Arabic word "banan", which means what?

Answer: Finger

Bananas are possibly the most popular fruit in the world. Bananas originated in Southeast Asia, though they are now grown all over the world.
10. In Tim Burton's version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", Violet Beauregarde turned into what giant fruit?

Answer: Blueberry

Roald Dahl didn't like the original version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". I wonder what he would have thought of Mr Burton's version!

Blueberries are found in North America. They are eaten raw, as well as cooked into pies, baked into treats, and made into juices--among many other edible uses!
