With the arrival of spring, it was time for the annual ritual of spring cleaning. Whilst carrying out my labours I happened upon a number of pieces of string, all of varying lengths, in the most unusual of places. The first piece of string was buried under the cushions of my couch. Simply for the sake of it, I measured this piece of string and found that its length was exactly the same as the width of the "Mona Lisa". So, how long is a piece of string?
After giving the couch a thorough cleaning, I decided the light shades would be my next target. While I was precariously perched on a stool unscrewing the shades from their fixings, a second piece of string fell on my head. Whilst praising the Lord it wasn't a brick, I took to this string with my tape measure. This piece of string turned out to be the exact same length as a tennis court (marked out area). So, how long is a piece of string?
With all light shades cleaned and firmly fixed back in their locations, I proceeded to the entertainment unit. Amongst all the power cords for TV, DVD, Wii, Playstation, stereo etc. was yet another well-camouflaged short piece of string. The number of inches was the same as the number of United States presidents who had been assassinated while in office before the 21st century. So, how long is a piece of string?
I was cleaning the windows when I noticed a loose thread hanging from the curtains. I gave this stray thread a quick yank, only to discover that it was in fact a piece of string still attached to the curtains. I yanked again and again and again. Five minutes later I was left with an extremely long piece of string and no curtains. Another five minutes with the tape measure allowed me to deduce that this piece of string was the same length as the Titanic. So, how long is a piece of string?
882 feet 9 inches
The musty smell emanating from the bookcase drew me towards its well stocked shelves. I dusted along my much-loved books from Austen to Bronte, from Chaucer to Dickens, from Eliot to...well you get the idea. As I reached the O section, a piece of string was swept to the floor. Performing the usual ritual, I was quite surprised to find that the string's length in millimetres corresponded with the numerical title of the George Orwell novel it was swept from. So, how long is a piece of string?
At this point in time, my cleaning had reached its halfway point. I decided that I had earned myself a cup of tea and so proceeded to the kitchen. As I was jiggling my teabag up and down in the mug, I became curious as to the length of the string attached to it. Old habits die hard and it was only a matter of seconds until I found that the number of inches the string measured was the same as the number of members in the group the Thompson Twins in 1982. So, how long is a piece of string?
The doorbell rang, so I answered it to find the two young boys from next door. "Can we use your backyard to play cricket?" they asked. "Yes, but on the condition you both go and find me a piece of string that is the same length as a cricket pitch from stump to stump" I replied. It wasn't long before they were back with string in hand. "Here you go" they said. So, how long is a piece of string?
I left the two boys to their cricket and went back to my cleaning duties. From inside I could hear the sounds of bat on ball until it was interrupted by the sound of ball through window. I went back outside to investigate and found the boys had scampered over the fence. Hanging on the fence was the piece of string they used to measure the cricket pitch, however it was not as long as I remembered it to be. Upon measuring the string I found that its length was the exact length jumped by Bob Beamon in the long jump event at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. So, how long is a piece of string?
I took the vacuum to clean up the broken glass, but when I switched it on it was just like a wooden horse, that is, it wooden go. So, like most men, I started to pull it apart with no real idea of what I was doing. But my efforts were not in vain. A piece of string had been sucked up the hose and blocked it. I managed to get the string out in one piece and found it to be the same in length, in metres, as the number of questions asked in original 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' game show (and also in the original 'Who's the Expert' game at FunTrivia). So, how long is a piece of string?
With all my cleaning completed, I decided to unwind with some music. I took out my four disc set of 'Mozart's String Quartets' only to find the discs missing and a quartet of strings in their place. After measuring I found the most extraordinary thing. The lengths of each string, all different and in inches, corresponded with numbers in the titles of songs found elsewhere in my collection. They were as follows- The Beatles' "When I'm ___"; Eddie Cochran's "___ Flight Rock"; and The Rolling Stones' "___ Light Years From Home". Now for something completely different: how long ISN'T a piece of string?
