Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This young royal figure was only 17 when she was murdered along with her family. Some claim, however, that she escaped the fate of her family and lived to a ripe old age. What was her name?

Answer: Anastasia

Among those claiming to be Anastasia were Anna Anderson and the Polish woman Franziska Schanzkowski, who was rescued from a canal in Berlin in 1920. It's my theory that she's currently residing in a spaceship hovering above the Earth, with Elvis and Jim Morrison. (In other words, I'm skeptical!)
2. This musician died in a plane crash alongside Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper at the very young age of 17. What was his name?

Answer: Ritchie Valens

Valens was portrayed quite nicely by Lou Diamond Phillips in the film 'La Bamba'. Can't say I was too fond of the version of that song by Los Lobos though...
3. An 18th century English poet, he committed suicide at the age of 17! Which of the following was he?

Answer: Thomas Chatterton

His style of poetry was the inspiration for many of the Romantic era poets who came a generation later.
4. One of the youngest English monarchs, he did not have much time to enjoy his reign, which lasted from 1547-1553. Who was this English King who died at 16?

Answer: Edward VI

Edward was son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, but was a sickly little fellow. Mary I came to power after his death, following the execution of poor Lady Jane Grey (see below).
5. St. Joan of Arc, the 'Maid of Orleans', only lived to be 19.

Answer: True

Joan was burned at the stake in Rouen on May 30, 1431 at only 19 years of age, accused of witchcraft and heresy by the English.
6. Probably the son of Akhnaton (or perhaps Amenhotep III), this Egyptian Pharoah, well known to us today, died at the age of 18. Who was he?

Answer: Tut

King Tut, or Tutankhamen, reigned during the 14th century BC during the 18th Egyptian Dynasty. His tomb was discovered by Howard Carter whose project was being funded by Lord Carnarvon. And despite claims by Steve Martin, he was neither born in Arizona nor did he move to Babylonia...but he did have a condo made of stone!
7. Billy the Kid was under the age of 20 when he met his demise.

Answer: False

Actually Billy, aka William Bonney, was 22 when he was gunned down by Sheriff Pat Garrett. Billy supposedly killed his first man at 12 and killed 22 in total. He was marvelously portrayed by Emilio Estevez, I thought...
8. Another English monarch who died at a rather young age, she reigned for nearly 2 weeks. Who was this 'Lady' who was 16 at her death?

Answer: Jane Grey

Lady Jane was the great-granddaughter of Henry VII and was named successor to Edward VI, the youth mentioned above. Unfortunately, Mary I was excited to earn her fine sobriquet 'Bloody Mary' and she made quick work of the little lady.
9. Only 20 when he died, the victim of a gunshot wound while engaged in a duel, he was the founder of group theory in mathematics. Who was this young French fellow?

Answer: Galois

Evariste Galois fortunately left a brilliant paper about his theory, which he had written the night before his duel, for posterity to enjoy and prosper by.
10. Anne Frank died at the age of 16 in Auschwitz.

Answer: False

It wasn't in Auschwitz, but in Bergen-Belsen that poor little Anne met her end. She was stricken by the disease typhus while languishing in the camp and of course could receive no medical attention. Now her diary has the attention of the world...we will always remember her by it.
