Every Hogwarts student must don the Sorting Hat when they arrive at the school for their first year. The hat looks into their minds to determine which Hogwarts House they belong in. There are four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.

Sometimes, the Sorting Hat sings of current events, such as in "The Order of the Phoenix", when it mentions, "Hogwarts is in danger from external, deadly foes" after Voldemort has returned to power.
The Sorting Hat originally belonged to Godric Gryffindor, one of the school's founders, before being enchanted to sort the students. On occasion, the Sword of Gryffindor can appear within the hat in an emergency. It can only be removed by those in the Gryffindor House.
