Checkmating is when the king piece can't move without being attacked. If the king's square isn't under attack, but every square around it is, then it's a stalemate. When a stalemate happens, it's a draw.

The pawn only moves straight, but it can capture pieces that are 1 square northeast or northwest from it. If a pawn manages to make it to the end of the board, it can be swapped out with a stronger piece in a process called 'promotion'. The first move a pawn makes can be 2 squares away!
