Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the overall commander of the British cavalry who ordered the famous 'Charge of the Light Brigade' at Balaclava in the Crimea?

Answer: Lord Lucan

Yes, it was the ancestor of the infamous modern day Lord Lucan. Richard Bingham, 7th Earl of Lucan, disappeared in 1974 following the murder of his children's nanny, Sandra Rivett. Various theories have been put forward as to his whereabouts including suicide, murder and radical plastic surgery to change his identity.

Lord Cardigan, by the way, LED the charge. The two were brothers-in-law and each detested the other.
2. Which British artist painted "Light of the World"?

Answer: William Holman Hunt

The painting symbolizes his idea of salvation coming to a dark, frightening world. To make it more realistic, he painted mostly at night by the light of a lamp.

Holman Hunt was a member of the select band of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The other alternative choices to this question are the rest of the group. They painted only serious, romantic or religious subjects. Their art is characterised by the strict habit of painting everything from a direct observation-hence Holman Hunts' use of a lamp to create this particular painting.
3. I'm not going to ask what a light year is. Instead I want to know who or what was "Buzz Lightyear"?

Answer: Animated character in film "Toy Story"

"Toy Story" is the first ever fully computer-animated feature length film. Created by Disney and Pixar, it was released in 1995.

According to info on the Internet Movie Data Base (imdb.com), the character
Syd Phillips "is said to be inspired by a former Pixar employee of the same last name who was known to disassemble toys and use the parts to build bizarre creations".

Still wondering about that pop star? If you ask nicely, I might just admit I made them up!
4. Which aptly named brothers (whose name means light) were among the first pioneers of moving pictures?

Answer: Lumiere brothers

Auguste and Louis Lumiere were the sons of a successful portrait artist, Antoine, who became interested in photography and opened a factory making and supplying photographic equipment in Lyons, France.

Louis began experimenting with the photographic plates and produced a new 'dry' plate process when he was just 17 years old.

The Lumiere camera was a machine for both production and development. Not only could it perform two tasks at once but weighing just 12 pounds it was much smaller than it's rival the Kinetoscope, invented by Edison. The Kinetoscope was so large and cumbersome it could only be used under studio conditions. Their camera could be used anywhere and started the trend of 'realism' cinematography.
5. Which light colour is the club colour of the Cambridge Boat Race crew?

Answer: Blue

The challenge to have a boat race came from two friends, Charles Merivale, at Cambridge and Oxford student Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the famous poet). The first one held was 12 March 1829

Another tradition is also that the loser of the race challenges the winner to a re-match the following year.
6. What letter needs to go before 'light' to make this famous musical piece by Rimsky Korsakov? ?light of the Bumblebee

Answer: F

This piece is from his opera "Tsar Saltan". Probably his most well known and popular work is his symphonic suite "Scheherazade" written in 1888.

After leaving the Navy in 1871 he entered the faculty of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He became one of the world's greatest music theorists and taught several students who later became famous composers in their own right. Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky were two of them.

He also completed Mussorgsky's opera "Boris Godunov" after the death of the composer left it unfinished. It is usually this version you will hear performed by orchestras and opera companies today.
7. Who played the lead male character in the film "The Unbearable Lightness of Being"?

Answer: Daniel Day-Lewis

I never saw this film, but this is a direct quote of the actor's view of the part:

"After filming The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988)) I was hopelessly at sea. I was extremely unhappy most of the time. I think I probably felt I'd made a fundamental error in agreeing to do that movie even though it was the part and the film that everyone wanted to do. And God help us, that is, in itself, a reason not to do something".

So, who needs movie critics?
8. This delightful screen character had a name which suggested she might walk very quietly on her way down to breakfast at a well known jewelery shop! What was Holly's last name?

Answer: Golightly

Audrey Hepburn captivated millions with her delightfully fey performance in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Based on the novel by Truman Capote and directed by Blake Edwards, George Peppard was her co-star. She initially trained as a ballerina both in Arnhem and later with Marie Rambert in London.

In later life she devoted most of her time to working for UNICEF. My favourite quote of hers is not from a movie but her real life experience in Africa: "The 'Third World' is a term I don't like very much, because we're all one world. I want people to know that the largest part of humanity is suffering."
9. Birmingham, England's, symphonic rock group-Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) were managed by Don Arden. He was the father of which talent show judge?

Answer: Sharon Osbourne

Yes it was "Shaarern!" as her husband Ozzy would say. The televised goings on of this grizzly family made compulsively gruesome viewing-a bit like the Adams Family but with real people.

Sharon was a judge on the "America's Got Talent" show and "The X Factor" in the UK.
10. Well, you've come this far with me but don't think you're going to get off too lightly with this last question: What kind of organisms would have the following essential light-emitting components: the organic molecule luciferin and the enzyme luciferase?

Answer: Bioluminescent creatures

The majority of bioluminescent creatures are marine but we also have the very pretty fireflies.
