Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character from the pen of Roald Dahl described a fart as a whizzpopper?

Answer: The BFG

Whizzpoppers are caused by drinking frobscottle, a green, fizzy beverage found in Giant Country in which the bubbles go down instead of up. It is extremely popular in Giant Country as there is no drinking water and as the BFG said in the 1982 book, "Us giants is making whizzpoppers all the time! Whizzpopping is a sign of happiness. It is music in our ears!"
2. "He that lives upon hope will die farting" is a quote from an essay from 1781, authored by which Founding Father of the United States?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

The essay, titled "Fart Proudly" was written by Franklin to highlight the pretentious attitude held by many of Europe's academic societies, and included Franklin's proposal that a drug should be made which would make farts, "not only inoffensive, but agreeable as Perfumes".
The essay is available in the collection, "Fart Proudly: Writings of Benjamin Franklin You Never Read in School" (2003), which also includes the illuminating essay, "On Choosing a Mistress".
3. If, while in Norway, I went to watch FL Fart, which sport would I be a fan of?

Answer: Soccer

The full name of this club is Fotballaget Fart, which translates as "the football team with speed", fart being a Norwegian word meaning speed. The club is best known for the successes of its women's team, but Thorstein Helstad who won 38 international caps for Norway started his career at the club, before going on to play for Rosenborg and Brann, also from Norway, and Le Mans and Monaco of France.

As he retired from football in 2015, I guess that makes him an old fart?
4. "Actions defined a man; words were a fart in the wind." is a quote from "The Last Don", a 1996 novel from which author?

Answer: Mario Puzo

All four possible answers are writers of great mob novels, Leonardo Sciascia for works such as "The Day of the Owl" (1984) and "To Each His Own" (1992), Max Allan Collins wrote the graphic novel, later made into a film, "Road to Perdition" (1998) and Richard Condon was responsible for "Prizzi's Honor" (1982).
The answer though was the great Mario Puzo who also wrote such classics as "The Godfather" (1969), "The Sicilian" (1984) and "Omerta" (2000).
5. "I don't like fancy learnin' books, I don't like apple tarts. I don't like cozy breakfast nooks, I don't like modern arts... Well I like farts! Yes, I like farts! I like long farts, short farts, wet farts, your farts" is taken from the song, "I Like Farts" as featured in which popular TV show?

Answer: Family Guy

In the season seven episode of Family Guy, "The Man with Two Brians" (2008), the Griffin family get a new dog after Brian strains his back while trying to rescue Peter from a lake. The new dog, christened, New Brian, has a very upbeat attitude, causing Brian to move out. He also apparently likes farts!
6. The song "Pizza Toots", sung to the tune of "Jingle Bells", warning of the high probability of farting after eating pizza was used to promote which 2015 movie?

Answer: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

Yep, those lovable and annoying chipmunks were the purveyors of this fine recording, containing lines such as "Ooey, gooey cheese, Crusty, crust so right, Feel sorry for the fool, Who's sleeping next to us tonight" and "Ain't no fighting it, Might be loud, Might leave a cloud, But go on let it rip."
The singing voices of the chipmunks were provided by Steve Vining, Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and his wife Janice Karman.
7. William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray are the authors of a series of children's books about Walter. What is Walter?

Answer: A Farting Dog

"Walter The Farting Dog" was first published in 2001 and has sold almost two million copies in hardback alone. The book was so successful that Kotzwinkle and Murray wrote a follow up in 2004, "Walter the Farting Dog Farts Again" and have written three more in the series since then.
In 2006, the Chicago Tribune newspaper reported that Chief of Staff to President George W. Bush, Josh Bolten, kept a copy on display in his office at the White House as a conversation starter.
8. In 1980, which Scottish comedian, while on UK's biggest chat show, said that Elton John's audience had made him feel "as welcome as a fart in a space suit"?

Answer: Billy Connolly

Elton liked to help UK talent achieve success in USA when possible, and with this in mind, he invited Billy "Big Yin" Connolly to open for him on his American tour. Unfortunately, the move didn't go over too well as Connolly's already strong Glaswegian accent became stronger due to his nervousness making him largely unintelligible to the American audiences.
Luckily, Connolly wasn't put off and did go on to find a level of success and even love in North America.
He uttered his now well known quote, whilst appearing on "Parkinson" which ran from 1971 to 2007 and regularly attracted over ten million viewers.
9. Which religious figure asked and answered, "What is like a smelly fart that, although invisible, is obvious? One's own faults, that are precisely as obvious as the effort made to hide them"?

Answer: 7th Dalai Lama

The seventh Dalai Lama, born Kelzang Gyatso, showed an aptitude for profound wisdom as a child and was enthroned as Dalai Lama in 1721, aged 13.
He is not the only Dalai Lama to talk about farts, as in 2013, the fourteenth Dalai Lama, in an interview in which he described himself as simply one of seven billion human beings, told a story about how he looks round before lifting his butt cheek to fart while on a plane.
10. Which of the following is often used as an natural aid to reduce farting?

Answer: Peppermint Tea

Staying hydrated cuts down the chances of being constipated, which leads to excess gas. If a stool remains in your gut, through being constipated, it will continue to ferment, producing extra gas that manifests itself in particularly bad smelling farts.

Fizzy drinks contain a lot of gas, leading to much farting and burping. What goes in must come out right?

The NHS in UK recommend drinking peppermint tea with meals as this aids digestion, which helps cut down on the number of farts emitted and means the ones that do escape will have a more pleasant odour.
