Situated in the southern Indian Ocean, Heard Island is dominated by Big Ben, a volcanic composite cone with a diameter of 25km. The highest peak in this mountain range is Mawson Peak, named after Sir Douglas Mawson, leader of an Australian-British expedition which visited the island in 1929.
