Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who authored the book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life", published 24th November 1859?

Answer: Charles Robert Darwin FRS

Darwin proposed that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and put forward the theory that this branching pattern resulted from a process known as Natural Selection. Although his theory was accepted in his own lifetime, there were still people who refuted this many decades after his death and in parts of the U.S. it was illegal for a teacher to teach his theory in schools.

8. "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." So begins J.R.R. Tolkien's famous book. But where in Middle-earth is this hole? (Think counties in England, a breed of British draught horse, and the cat in Alice in Wonderland.)

Answer: The Shire

The Shire is the home of hobbits! The book "The Hobbit" doesn't spend much time in the Shire, though. Instead, it follows the adventures of a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who goes on a quest with a band of dwarves and a wizard, encountering elves, dragons, giant spiders, and skin-changers along the way.

There are a lot of counties ending in -shire in England (think Derbyshire, Yorkshire, or Shropshire) and this naming pattern was popularized in the tenth century. The Cheshire Cat in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland is a fantastical cat who appears and disappears suddenly (Cheshire is also a county in England). Shire horses are known for their ability to pull a lot of weight.
