Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of case led to a dramatic car pursuit, and crash, at the opening of 'Let It Bleed', the seventh John Rebus case?

Answer: Kidnapping

Police were in pursuit of two men who had picked up a ransom left after a 'kidnapping'. Their car crashed on the Forth road bridge.
2. In 'Let It Bleed', two youths being chased by police jumped off the Forth road bridge but their fall was broken when they hit the deck of a navy ship. What was her name?

Answer: HMS Descant

They still ended up as dead as if they had hit the water from several hundred feet, "which, as everyone said back at the station, saved the police frogmen from a thankless sub-zero dip," Rebus noted.
3. Which influential position was the victim of a crime related to, at the start of 'Let It Bleed'?

Answer: Lord Provost of Edinburgh

The Lord Provost had requested that his daughter's disappearance be investigated. She had walked out of the house one morning and not come back.
4. D/I John Rebus was well used to murders, but the body count in 'Let It Bleed' increased rapidly with three suicides. What was found on the body of the third victim?

Answer: A prison release letter

Shug McAnally walked into the monthly surgery of a local councillor, Tom Gillespie, and blew his own head off with a sawn-off shotgun. The councillor said he had never seen him before.
5. After the car crash, the injured Detective Chief Inspector Leatherdale was expected to be in hospital for some time. Chief Superintendent Watson appointed a new DCI. Who was it?

Answer: Gill Templer

Gill Templer had once been John Rebus's lover. She made it clear they were not to pick up where they had left off. Watson could have promoted Rebus or Alister Flower, but knew that each mutually hated the other.
6. In 'Let It Bleed', D/I John Rebus's daughter worked for 'Scottish Welfare for Ex-Prisoners', an organisation that helped convicts after their release from jail. What name did the police give to the organisation?

Answer: SOOTY

The 'Scottish Welfare for Ex-Prisoners' organisation preferred to be known as SWEEP. The police called it SOOTY. (Sooty and Sweep were puppet characters well known to British television viewers). Sammy Rebus had worked with prisoners in London before returning to Edinburgh.
7. John Rebus was thought to be asking too many awkward questions and ruffling too many feathers so he was ordered to go on leave. Rebus did not like the idea: what did he do as he left Chief Superintendent Watson's office?

Answer: Kicked a box of computer equipment

With the prospect of a visit from the HMIC (Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary) and heat from the local council, Watson wanted Rebus off the case. After clearing his desk, Rebus realised he had two problems: the first was that without work there was nothing to structure his daily life; the second was that without work he had no excuse not to book a dentist's appointment.
8. In 'Let It Bleed', John Rebus went looking for a notorious burglar called Rico Briggs. What made Briggs a very conspicuous person?

Answer: He had Hearts FC badges tattooed onto each cheek

Ricco was a big Hearts fan. One night after watching the team defeat their old rivals, Hibs, he got drunk and had Hearts badges tattooed on his face. He was a good burglar, but the fences reckoned he was too conspicuous. He soon came to loathe the team he had once loved.
9. What tragedy befell a close friend of D/I John Rebus in 'Let It Bleed'?

Answer: A dog killed her cat

Rebus and Dr Patience Aitken were estranged, but his daughter was staying with Patience. On a visit for tea, Rebus locked the cat flap so that the cat was trapped outside and when a dog got into the garden it could not run to safety.
10. During his investigation in 'Let It Bleed'. D/I John Rebus interviewed an American diplomat. In which state did he claim to have been brought up?

Answer: Illinois

At their meeting - in Edinburgh in winter- Rebus asked Haldayne: "Cold enough for you over here?" Haldayne replied: "I was brought up in Illinois. We get winters you wouldn't believe."
11. In 'Let It Bleed', John Rebus began to get a little worried about what he was doing when he was firmly, but politely warned off by a senior civil servant who was a near-namesake of a British rock star. Which rock star?

Answer: Ian Hunter

Sir Iain Hunter (I did say it was a near-namesake) was later described to Rebus as "Mr Scotland". He "had the power", Rebus was told. Ian Hunter was lead singer with Mott The Hoople.
12. In 'Let It Bleed', John Rebus was persuaded to accept an invitation to the home of a senior civil servant, where he was introduced to a Very Important Person. What rank did this VIP hold?

Answer: Secretary of State for Scotland

Rebus arrived at the palatial home of the civil servant where the other guests included the Deputy Chief Constable, a senior industrialist and the SoS. The men went clay pigeon shooting. Rebus felt he was being used, then the pressure continued: he was told that if he did not give up his enquiry, there could be dire consequences for the entire community.
13. As part of his enquiries in 'Let It Bleed', D/I John Rebus interviewed a convicted fraudster. What nickname had the fraudster been given by his fellow prisoners?

Answer: The apprentice boy

Derwood Charters was often called by the shortened first name 'Derry'. This led the prisoners to call him 'the apprentice boy' - perhaps after the North Ireland Protestant organisation officially named 'The Apprentice Boys of Derry', which is based in a city its members prefer to call Londonderry.
14. In the Rebus novel 'Let It Bleed', a man was killed following instructions in a letter smuggled out of prison. Who carried the message?

Answer: Samantha Rebus

In fact Gillespie was the murder victim. Rebus had thought Gillespie had something to hide. Later it transpired he had evidence to expose fraud, and he was killed because of that.
15. As 'Let It Bleed' reached its climax, more pressure was put on DI John Rebus by conspirators who had earned a lot of money by fraud. They also made a tape recording that suggested he was compliant with their crimes. Rebus, though, managed to get his hands on the tape. Where did he locate it?

Answer: From the left luggage office at Waverley Station

During a meeting with the co-conspirators, the totality of a scam involving millions of pounds was revealed. They claimed that the creation of thousands of jobs was justification enough for any wrong doing in the form of backhanders and bribes. Challenged as to what he was going to do, Rebus left without speaking. Later a tape recording was held over his head. Given all the information he had acquired at the meeting he should have arrested them, the conspirators said, therefore he was as guilty as them.
Who came out on top Rebus or the crooks? - if you want to find that out, you'll have to read the book.
