The 2001 movie "Ocean's Eleven" was a remake of the 1960 film of the same name. George Clooney essayed the role of the eponymous Danny Ocean, a former convict who assembles a team of eleven, including himself, to carry out an elaborate heist at a casino.
The remaining ten members of the "eleven" brought diverse skill sets to the team. These included mechanics, an acrobat, explosives expert, surveillance expert, and former casino owner. The heist is planned at a casino that is owned by the lover of Ocean's ex-wife bringing in a personal angle for Ocean.
The cast was kept closely under wraps and some of the actors themselves were unaware of their co-stars until filming began. Apart from Clooney, the core team included Brad Pitt as Rusty, Ocean's close friend, Matt Damon as Linus, a pickpocket, Bernie Mac as Frank Catton, a disgraced former croupier, and Elliott Gould as Reuben Tishkoff, a former casino owner. Casey Affleck and Scott Caan played brothers, Virgil and Turk Malloy, who are also expert mechanics. Eddie Jemison as Livingston Dell was brought in as the surveillance and electronics expert while Don Cheadle as Basher Tarr was the explosives expert. Qin Shaobo as Yen the acrobat and Carl Reiner playing Saul Bloom, an elderly con man, rounded out the eleven.
Other cast members included Julia Roberts as Tess, Danny's ex-wife, and Andy Garcia as Terry Benedict, owner of the casino to be robbed and Tess's current partner.
The film was directed by Steven Soderbergh and ended up becoming one of the top-grossing movies of 2001. Its success spawned two sequels, both also helmed by Soderbergh. A third was planned but shelved after the death of Bernie Mac in 2008. A spin-off "Ocean's 8" was released in 2018 featuring an all-women cast for the 8 led by Danny Ocean's sister, Debbie Ocean, played by Sandra Bullock.
