Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Luke, on patrol outside of Echo Base, encounters a wampa.

Three years after the Battle of Yavin where the Death Star was destroyed, the Rebel Alliance is now hiding out on the ice planet of Hoth. Darth Vader, attempting to take the fight to the Rebels, sends out probes to many of the systems in an attempt to locate the Rebel base and one of the probes reaches Hoth. Luke Skywalker, out on patrol on his tauntaun, sees the probe and goes to investigate. Not aware of his surroundings, Luke is knocked unconscious by a wampa, an indigenous carnivorous creature.

Luke awakes to find himself hanging upside down in a cave with his lightsaber out of reach on the ground below. Using the Force, Luke wills the weapon to his hand and manages to free himself just as the wampa attacks, cutting off its arm in the melee. Luke runs out and attempts to return to base on foot, but the weather slowly gets to deathly cold levels. In the blizzard, Luke sees the Force ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi who tells Luke to go to Dagobah to train as a Jedi.

Han Solo sees that Luke has not reported back in and leaves the base to look for his friend.
2. The Empire attacks the Rebels on Hoth and destroys their base.

The Rebel base is discovered by the Empire forces when the probe they sent is shot at by Han Solo and Chewbacca, triggering its self-destruct mechanism. Aboard the Star Destroyer Executor, Darth Vader overrides Admiral Ozzel's dismissive attitude about the information and correctly directs the fleet to amass at Hoth for an attack.

The Rebels realize that they are going to be attacked and prepare for an evacuation. The Empire loses its element of surprise when the fleet emerges too close to Hoth and the Rebels have their shield up delaying the invasion. Ozzel is killed by Vader for his incompetence and the Empire forces prepare for a ground assault to destroy the shield generators.

The Rebels try to hold out as long as possible. Attacked by AT-ATs and AT-STs, the Rebels are ill-suited to repel such an assault but Rogue Squadron, led by Luke Skywalker, leads his rag-tag team to attack the armored Empire ordinance from beneath, with some success. Nevertheless, the sheer volume of the attack is too much and the Empire takes Echo Base while destroying their shield.
3. Luke flies to Dagobah to train with a Jedi master - Yoda.

When the Rebels flee Echo Base, Luke Skywalker finds an X-Wing fuelled up with R2-D2 loaded up inside. Luke escapes and sets coordinates to fly to Dagobah, a marshy and remote planet. Upon approach, Luke has trouble navigating through the fog and crash-lands his ship in a boggy part of the marsh. Luke and R2-D2 get out, but not before a Dragonsnake decides to taste the droid.

Luke and R2-D2 run into a small, green, eccentric resident of the planet. When they explain to the creature that they are looking for a great Jedi master, the creature offers to take them there. They go to the creature's hut and Luke keeps insisting to get to Yoda, but the creature keeps deflecting the conversation and saying that Yoda is "not far". Eventually, Luke lets his frustration show and the creature remarks to Obi-Wan's Force ghost that Luke has no patience. Unbeknownst, Luke has been in Yoda's company the entire time.
4. The Emperor identifies Luke as a threat to the Empire.

Aboard the Star Destroyer Executor, Darth Vader is told that the Emperor wants to contact him. In order to make a clear transmission, Vader is forced to order his ship out of the asteroid field. Once clear, Vader goes to his private chambers to receive the message from the leader of the Empire.

The Emperor's message is simple - there is a new enemy who has the potential to destroy the Empire and that is Luke. Vader advises that the young threat could be turned to the dark side and the Emperor agrees that he would be "a powerful ally". Vader makes a vow that he will turn Luke to the dark side, or Luke will die.
5. Luke has a strange encounter with Darth Vader in a cave.

Luke begins training his body and his mind under the watchful eye of Master Yoda. He has a difficult time controlling his emotions, however, much to Yoda's dismay. Indeed, much of what Yoda teaches Luke is about the ease of going to the dark side and the perils therein. One of these lessons happens when Luke goes by a cave and senses the dark side within it.

Yoda advises Luke not to take his lightsaber, however, Luke feels that he is better equipped to go in with it. Once inside, Luke sees a vision of Darth Vader and draws his lightsaber to do battle with him. In one move, Luke beheads Vader and the head rolls off. The mask bursts open in a flash of light and Luke sees his own face staring back at him. This is a warning rather than a vision of the future, however, Yoda is not pleased by what transpired in the cave.
6. Han Solo evades a Star Destroyer by pretending to be a piece of garbage.

The Millennium Falcon is one of the last ships to leave Echo Base, and they get out right at the nick of time, as Darth Vader enters the hangar. Aboard are Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and C-3PO. To evade, they enter an asteroid field and land inside a cave in one of the larger ones. However, the 'cave' turns out to be a space slug that attempts to devour the ship. The Millennium Falcon narrowly escapes, right into the waiting guns of the Imperial Fleet.

Instead of making a run for it, Han Solo turns the ship and makes as though he's going to attack the Star Destroyer. At the last possible moment, he veers off and makes a landing on the back of the Star Destroyer's communications array, somewhere that the ship has no sensors. Before the ship goes into hyperspace, it dumps its trash and the Millennium Falcon quietly detaches along with it.
7. Yoda pulls an X-Wing out of a swamp.

Luke's training is intense and relentless as Yoda drives him harder and harder to find the limits of his personality. One day, however, Luke is dismayed to find that his X-Wing has nearly completely submerged in the swamp where he crash-landed it. Yoda tells him to use the Force to get it out. Luke, not convinced that he will be able to, says that he will try.

"No, try not! Do or do not, there is no try." --Yoda

Luke steadies himself, concentrates, and fails! He complains to Yoda that the X-Wing is too big for him to get out of the swamp and, frustrated, goes to walk away. Yoda, with a sad look on his face, gets it out with no problem and settles it on solid land. This highlights for Yoda the failures of Luke's personality and the danger of his emotions getting the better of him.
8. Han Solo takes the Millennium Falcon to an old friend, Lando Calrissian, to get repairs.

Han Solo has a damaged hyperdrive and needs someone who can repair it, but also does not have ties to the Empire. He recalls that his friend, Lando Calrissian, has a mining operation stationed at Cloud City on the nearby planet of Bespin. He knows that Lando does not have any loyalty to the Empire, but he also knows not to trust him too much.

Lando and Han go way back. Lando once owned the Millennium Falcon and Han won the ship in a card game off of Lando when it was unclear whether there was any cheating involved (see the movie "Solo" for more clarification on this matter).

When Han, Leia, Chewie, and C-3PO get to Cloud City, many things make them suspicious, not the least that the golden droid is found dismantled and in a trash heap.
9. Han, Leia, Chewie, and C-3PO are betrayed in Cloud City.

It turns out that Boba Fett anticipated the move that Han Solo did to get away from the Star Destroyer and arrived in Cloud City before the Rebels did. The Empire had already struck a deal with Lando before his old friend arrived and they were being set up for betrayal. The trap is sprung and Han, Leia, Chewie, and C-3PO's parts are taken into custody. Han is tortured by Vader in order for Luke to sense it with the Force and walk into a trap of his own.

Han suffers the torture bravely, and even attempts to attack Lando for turning against him. Leia thinks that Vader will leave them all dead, however, Lando tells them that Vader is actually looking for a 'Skywalker' fellow, and they all realize that Luke is on his way and about to fall into a similar trap. Meanwhile, Chewie starts to put C-3PO back together, but starts by attaching his head on backwards.
10. Han Solo is frozen in Carbonite.

Darth Vader wants to take Luke, and he wants to take him alive. His intention is to freeze him in carbonite, however, he does not know if a human can survive the process. Therefore, he decides to try it out on a test subject, and Han Solo is chosen. Boba Fett will take the frozen Han to Jabba the Hutt and collect the bounty on his head, well, if the process is successful.

Han is brought to the carbon-freezing chamber and Chewbacca tries to attack the stormtroopers but is restrained. Han tells him that it will be all right, which pacifies Chewie for the moment. Han is then allowed to say goodbye to Leia and they share a kiss.

"I love you" -Leia
"I know" -Han

Vader starts up the chamber and Han is frozen successfully. At that time, Vader is informed that Luke has made his arrival at Cloud City and Vader orders the chamber prepared for his next prey.
11. Luke confronts Darth Vader who tells him the truth about his father.

Luke arrives in Cloud City to find Boba Fett taking Han's body away. Luke shoots at him but Fett makes it off planet. Luke continues and sees Leia and Chewie, and Leia shouts to Luke that it's a trap. Luke, nevertheless, enters the carbon-freezing chamber and duels with Darth Vader. The battle, however, is very one-sided, Luke unable to match Vader's skill and experience.

Vader lures Luke into the freezing pit and Luke falls in. Vader turns on the machine but Luke manages to jump out of the pit and the fight continues. Vader gets the upper hand and offers Luke a chance to surrender, which Luke refuses. Luke presses the attack relentlessly and seems to be doing well until Vader cuts off Luke's right hand, the one holding the lightsaber, and reveals a terrible truth:

"If you only knew the power of the dark side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father." -Vader
"He told me enough. He told me you killed him." - Luke
"No. I am your father." -Vader

Luke is shocked and horrified, even as Darth Vader offers to work with Luke to overthrow the Emperor. Luke prefers to die and throws himself down a ventilation shaft.
12. Luke gets a prosthetic hand aboard a Rebel ship.

As Luke is falling down the shaft, he exits out the bottom of Cloud City and manages to hand onto an antenna. Luke calls out to Obi-Wan, and then to Leia. At the same time, Leia, C-3PO, and Chewie are escaping Cloud City. They had been aided by Lando Calrissian in a double-cross, and now Lando is piloting the Millennium Falcon. Leia manages to hear Luke's cries of pain and tells the rest of the crew where to go in order to save Luke. The injured Jedi is pulled onto the Millennium Falcon as they make their escape.

Aboard the Millennium Falcon, the Rebels are pursued by Imperial TIE Fighters but manage to get away. R2-D2 saves the day by activating the hyperdrive and the Millennium Falcon shoots off to rendezvous with the Rebel fleet. Some time later, aboard one of the vessels, Luke is being attended to by a medical droid and now has a new hand. As Luke, Leia and the others meet, they begin to formulate a plan to get Han back.
