Answer: Billy Paul

Billy Paul sang "Me and Mrs Jones" in 1973. It was a number one hit in the US but in the UK it only reached number twelve.
2. Who sang this song about an illicit affair back in the 'eighties? "Your friends tell you it's no future in loving a married man. If I can't see you when I want I'll see you when I can. If lovin' you is wrong, I don't wanna be right. If lovin' you is wrong, I don't wanna be right."

Answer: Rod Stewart

"If Loving You is Wrong (I don't Want to be Right)" was a number 23 hit for Rod in 1980. It was a cover of a Luther Ingram song whose version did much better in the States.
3. "Isn't that my girl And is that my best friend Aren't they walking much too close together And it don't look like they're talking about the weather" Who was this rather suspicious guy?

Answer: Gene Pitney

Gene Pitney sang "I Must Be Seeing Things" back in 1965. It was the fourth of his eleven UK top ten singles. In 1989 he reprised "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" with Marc Almond and finally hit the number one spot.
4. Somebody's girl has clearly been unfaithful, can you remember whose? "It breaks your heart in two To know she's been untrue But, oh what will you do? When she says to you there's someone new We're through, we're through."

Answer: Roy Orbison

A number one tearjerker for Roy Orbison back in 1964 "It's Over" was Roy's second record to hit the top spot in the UK.
5. Mary MacGregor was having a bit of a dilemma when she sang these words; can you remember the song title? "There's been another man that I've needed and I've loved But that doesn't mean I love you less And he knows you can't possess me and he knows he never will There's just this empty place inside of me that only he can fill"

Answer: Torn Between Two Lovers

Americans must love this sort of thing! "Torn Between Two Lovers" was a number one hit in the US in 1977, we Brits, being more reserved, only put it at number four. It was Mary's only chart success in the UK.
6. "It's a human sign When things go wrong When the scent of her lingers And temptation's strong Into the boundary Of each married man Sweet deceit comes calling And negativity lands" Which of these gentlemen was singing about temptation?

Answer: Elton John

Elton John's "Sacrifice" was his first solo number one in the UK, reaching top spot in 1990. He had previously got to number one dueting with Kiki Dee on "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" in 1976.
7. Now then, this was never released as a single but became an integral part of this band's live act back in the 'sixties. Which band? "He told me he loves you He ain't no liar, I ain't either So let's have a smile for an old engine driver So let's have a smile for an old engine driver Please take a sweet Come take a walk with me We'll sort it out Back at my place, maybe"

Answer: The Who

Fairly unambiguously entitled "A Quick One While He's Away", this number failed to make the cut on The Who's original "Live at Leeds" album but has appeared on subsequent re-releases. Keith Moon's banter before the track starts is priceless.
8. "Do you remember, mama, when I knocked upon your door? I said you had the nerve to tell me You didn't want me no more, yeah I open my front door, hear my back door slam, You must have one of them new fangled, New fangled back door man." The mighty Led Zeppelin, but which song?

Answer: Since I've Been Loving You

From Led Zeppelin 3, "Since I've Been Loving You" is a terrific 12 bar number on an album that was more accoustic than their first two outings. John Bonham's drumming on this is just sensational. Nods here to Howlin' Wolf amongst others.
9. "You men eat your dinner. Eat your pork and beans. I eat more chicken Than any man ever seen, yeah, yeah. I'm a back door man. The men don't know, But the little girls understand." Which Californian band covered this?

Answer: The Doors

I think 'threatening' might sum up Howlin' Wolf's version of Willie Dixon's "Back Door Man" but The Doors did a mighty good job on this blues standard.
10. Finally a warning for all would-be philanderers; who gave us this cautionary tale? "Home improvement expert Harold Hill of Harold Hill Of Do-It-Yourself dexterity, and double glazing skill Came home to find another gentleman's kippers in the grill So he sanded off his winkle with his Black and Decker drill"

Answer: Ian Dury and The Blockheads

The late, great Ian Dury of course with "This Is What We Find".
