1. "Georgy Girl"

Answer: The Seekers

Number two on The Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, a further five weeks in the top ten. The recording of "Georgy Girl" did make number one on the Cashbox chart for one week. In their home country Australia, the record was number two for three weeks. Over in the UK the record was the number two song for two weeks and number three for three weeks. The song was written for the movie of the same name starring Lynn Redgrave, sister of Vanessa Redgrave.

Extra Trivia; Both sisters were nominated for Academy Awards in 1967 for their 1967 movie roles. Vanessa for "Morgan, A Suitable Case for Framing" and Lynn for "Georgy Girl", marking them the second set of sisters to be nominated in the same year.
2. "Penny Lane"

Answer: The Beatles

The Beatles wrote "Penny Lane" as a nod to their teenage years in Liverpool. The song reached number two in the UK as did the flipside, "Strawberry Fields Forever".
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox chart. Down under the song topped the Aussie chart for three weeks and also topped the New Zealand pop chart.
3. "I'm a Believer"

Answer: The Monkees

Written by Neil Diamond, then a Brill Building songwriter, working alongside Carole King, Cynthia Weil, Neil Sedaka and many others. The song was picked up by the producers of The Monkees and it became their second single release in 1966. "I'm A Believer" went to number one in Australia in 1966 and number one in the UK in early 1967.

It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks becoming the Monkees' biggest chart success. The record was a top ten hit for twelve weeks.
4. "Somethin' Stupid"

Answer: Nancy and Frank Sinatra

Nancy and Frank Sinatra recorded "Something Stupid" after hearing the original version by the writer, Carson Parks and his wife Gail Foote. In 1967 the Sinatra's recorded the song and it became an instant hit, making the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, remaining in the top ten for nine weeks. In Australia the song was number one for two weeks, while over in the UK the song also topped the chart for two weeks.

This number one hit marked the first time a father and daughter duo reached the top of the pop charts.
5. "A Whiter Shade of Pale"

Answer: Procol Harum

Procol Harum released "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in May 1967 and it entered the UK chart on May 27 and within two weeks it hit number one, where it stayed for six weeks. The recording made it to number five on the Billboard Hot 100. In Australia it was a number one for three weeks.

The song has taken on a life of its own and a number of sources claim it to be the most played British pop single since 1950.
6. "The Last Waltz"

Answer: Engelbert Humperdinck

"The Last Waltz" was the second number one of 1967 for Engelbert Humperdinck. Engelbert was born in 1936 in India to European parents and named Arnold Dorsey.
Englebert's distinctive voice came to the attention of Gordon Mills who was managing Tom Jones. "The Last Waltz" was also a number one for nine weeks in Australia. On the Billboard Hot 100 it only made it to number twenty five.
7. "All You Need Is Love"

The Beatles recorded "All You Need is Love" for a live worldwide television event in 1967. Helping them with the chorus were members of The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Small faces and also Eric Clapton and Mike McGear. "All You Need is Love" was a number one hit in the UK and Australia; in the USA it topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox charts.
8. "Respect"

Answer: Aretha Franklin

With a song written and originally recorded by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin achieved her first and only solo number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, when "Respect" topped the chart in June of 1967. Aretha had many hits, in fact between 1961 and 1998 she charted 88 songs on the Hot 100.

Although "Respect" was her only solo number one on the pop chart, she managed another number one when her duet with George Michael, "I Know You Were Waiting" hit the top spot in 1987. "Respect" was a top ten hit in Australia as it competed with the Otis Redding original which received a lot of airplay.

The record also made the top ten on the UK chart.
9. "This Is My Song"

Answer: Petula Clark

"This Is My Song" was written by Charlie Chaplin for the movie he directed in 1966, "The Countess from Hong Kong". Petula Clark recorded the song in three languages and with time left in the studio she (reportedly, reluctantly) recorded the song in English.

This became a worldwide smash topping the UK Charts and many European charts. The song rose as high number three on the Billboard Hot 100. In Australia the song was number one for six weeks. Petula shared the spoils in Australia with Harry Secombe whose version was equal to hers in sales. Harry Secombe's version reached number two on the British chart.
10. "Hello, Goodbye"

Answer: The Beatles

Another number one hit for the boys, "Hello, Goodbye" was written solely by Paul McCartney but as was the deal it is credited to Lennon-McCartney. Featured in their 'home' movie and album, "Magical Mystery Tour", the record made number one on the UK charts and also topped the charts in many European countries. It was number one in both Australia and New Zealand. In the USA the song topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox chart.
