Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Dedicated To the One I Love"

Answer: The Mamas and the Papas

"Dedicated To the One I Love" was originally recorded by the "5" Royales in 1957 and was a top twenty Rhythm and Blues hit for the group. The Shirelles successfully covered the song in 1959 and achieved a number one hit on the Billboard hot 100. In 1967 the Mamas and the Papas released a version which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song also reached number two in the UK. In Australia it went to number one for two weeks and re-entered the charts again in 2014 after its inclusion in the movie "The One I Love".
2. "Can't Take My Eyes Off You"

Answer: Frankie Valli

Frankie Valli's recording of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" written by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe reached number one on the US Cashbox chart in 1967. The song stayed in the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks peaking at number two. Ironically, although Frankie Valli was very popular in the UK, this song did not chart. In Australia the song peaked at number three.
3. "Soul Man"

Answer: Sam and Dave

Written by Isaac Hayes and Dave Porter, "Soul Man" was a number one hit for Sam and Dave on the Cashbox chart. The song made it to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. The record was held out of the top spot by Lulu with her hit, "To Sir With Love". "Soul Man" was Sam and Dave's biggest chart hit; the song reaching number twenty four in the UK and top ten in many European countries.

The record failed to chart in Australia, although the duo did achieve a top ten in 1966 with "Hold on! I'm Comin'".
4. "The Rain, The Park and Other Things"

Answer: The Cowsills

"The Rain, The Park and Other Things" was a number one hit for The Cowsills on Cashbox and a number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The group went on to have a number of hits in the late sixties; "Indian Lake" and "Hair" were both top ten hits. "The Rain, The Park and Other Things" did not chart in the UK but made it to number three in Australia.
The Cowsills were the inspiration for the TV series, "The Partridge Family" which made a star of David Cassidy.
5. "She'd Rather Be With Me"

Answer: The Turtles

The Turtles made it to number one on the US Record World Chart, number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on Cashbox, with their catchy follow up to "Happy Together", "She'd Rather Be With Me", in mid 1967. The record made it to number four in both the UK and Australia. The Turtles had two further top tens in the 1960s then faded from the charts.
6. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine"

Answer: Gladys Knight and the Pips

"I Heard it Through the Grapevine" was a number two hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for Gladys Knight and the Pips, held out of the top spot by The Monkees, then The Beatles.
Their recording did however make number one on the Cashbox. The UK chart recorded it as stalling at position 45. This record did not chart in Australia and I can't recall it getting much airplay. On the Billboard Hot 100 the Marvin Gaye version of the song made Number one for seven weeks in December 1968 through January 1969.
In Australia the song did not get the attention it deserved either from Gladys Knight or Marvin Gaye's version. It was not until mid 1970 when Creedence Clearwater Revival released their album "Cosmo's Factory", that we heard their eleven minute version of the song and then fell in love with it.
7. "Itchycoo Park"

Answer: The Small Faces

The Small Faces achieved their fourth top ten inside two years when "Itchycoo Park" peaked at number three on the British charts. The record struggled in the USA only making it to number fourteen on The Billboard Hot 100. In Australia the song was the group's only number one success.

The Small Faces followed "Itchycoo Park" with two further UK top tens, "Tin Soldier" in 1967 and "Lazy Sunday" in early 1968. The group morphed into the Faces with some personnel changes, such as the addition of Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. Steve Marriott, the nominal leader of the Faces, left the group and with Peter Frampton started Humble Pie.
8. "We get The funniest looks from everyone we meet". Which group is responsible for these lyrics?

Answer: The Monkees

"Here we come, walkin' down the street" was the opening line from "The Theme From The Monkees". The song released as a single in Australia where the female population, aged 11-15, had gone crazy for the Monkees. This resulted in the record being a number one hit and the Monkees' second number one hit in 1967.

The Monkees released thirteen singles between September 1966 and 1968 all of which made the top ten in Australia, eleven of these singles were top five hits. The single "The Theme From The Monkees" was not released in the USA or the UK.
9. "Baby I Need Your Lovin'"

Answer: Johnny Rivers

"Baby I Need Your Lovin" was a top ten hit in North America for the Four Tops in 1964. In 1967 Johnny Rivers recorded the song in his soulful style and scored a number one hit in Canada and a number three on the Billboard Hot 100. This was Johnny Rivers' follow up to his number one hit, "Poor Side of Town".

The record did not chart in the UK and only scraped into the top fifty in Australia.
10. "Lazy Day"

Answer: Spanky and Our Gang

Spanky and Our Gang achieved their moment in the spotlight with the release of "Lazy Day". "Lazy Day" is included here because it was the group's biggest hit and got to Number one in Canada and Sweden. The song did not chart in Australia or the UK. On the Billboard Hot 100 "Lazy Day" peaked at fourteen.

The group charted nine songs on the Billboard Hot 100 then like many sixties groups disbanded. Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane, after whom the group was named, became the lead singer for the Mamas and the Papas in the 1980s.
