Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Sykes has played with some of the best musicians over his long and storied career. Which drummer did he never get a chance to play with?

Answer: Lee Kerslake

John Sykes, born in the UK in 1959, has had the privilege of playing with many great drummers. He played with Brian Downey in Thin Lizzy, he got a chance to shred with Carmine Appice in Blue Murder and his work with Whitesnake allowed him play with Cozy Powell. Lee Kerslake is the long time drummer for Uriah Heep and even logged time with Ozzy Osbourne while Randy Rhoads was his guitarist. John Sykes has announced his plan to play with another phenomenal drummer, Mike Portnoy, of Dream Theater fame.
2. Daren Jay Ashba, more commonly known as DJ Ashba has played with some great bands during his career as a professional musician. Can you choose which band he has never played with?

Answer: Megadeth

Although Megadeth have had many great guitarists pass through their ranks, DJ Ashba was never one of them. Ashba has played with several metal, and non-metal acts, over the years. Believe it or not, in addition to being a talented guitarist, Ashba is also a gifted song writer.

Not one to be pigeonholed, Ashba has written for artists as varied as Motley Crue, Neil Diamond, Aimee Allen and Drowning Pool.
3. John William Lowery, otherwise known as John 5, has had an interesting career since he joined the pro ranks in the late 1980s. John 5 has an interesting style which lends his playing to several genres of music including metal, country, industrial and even bluegrass. Which artist has he not had the opportunity to play with?

Answer: Tommy Lee

Although Tommy Lee's solo albums are a who's who of musicians, John 5 never played with Tommy. John 5 got a chance to show his chops as a member of David Lee Roth's band, a band which has had Steve Vai and Jason Becker as previous guitarists. He also held the reins as a guitarist with scary rockers Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie.

In addition, the list of artists he has played with is quite impressive: Lita Ford, Meatloaf, Paul Stanley, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ricky Martin, k.d. Lang and so many others. John 5 is a very talented guitarist who's not afraid to step from one genre to another with very little effort.
4. Bruce Kulick is one of those type guitarists who come around once in a blue moon. His talent is incredible, his style fits in with anyone and everyone who has ever worked with him describes him as a true gentleman. With a career spanning over five decades, he has played with a very interesting assortment of musicians. Which one was not one of them?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney has played with some of the best available musicians, but never has he taken the studio with Mr. Kulick. The list of artists that Kulick has played with is mighty impressive. Grand Funk Railroad, ESP, Michael Schenker, Graham Bonnet and even the actor Don Johnson. In my opinion, Kulick's work with KISS on their "Alive III" album was pretty extraordinary.
5. It may seem like Jake E. Lee has fallen off the musical map, but he's still out there playing on tribute albums and he even has a trio called 3 Day Crush which he plays with. But let no one doubt Lee's musical pedigree. He has played with some of the best singers in the metal genre. Can you pick the guy he didn't perform with?

Answer: David Coverdale

Jake E. Lee has had the opportunity to play with three members of Black Sabbath in Osbourne, Gillen and Dio. If that isn't impressive, I don't know what is. Lee may not be as available as some of his fans would like, but he seems to release just enough music to stay on everyone's wish list when a guitar position opens up.

His 2005 release titled "A Fine Pink Mist" really showed his virtuosity as he played all instruments on the album.
6. Steve Vai is often mentioned as a guitar god who is coveted by anyone looking for some guitar shredding. His resume is mighty impressive and varied including stints in each of these bands sans one. Which one has he not played with?

Answer: Def Leppard

Steve Vai's work with other people's bands is awesome, but I really love his solo work. His bands have featured some great musicians such as Billy Sheehan, Mike Mangini (who replaced Mike Portnoy as drummer of Dream Theater), Devin Townsend (who was in Strapping Young Lad) and even Terry Bozzio. Great talent likes to surround itself with great talent I suppose. One of the greatest rock bands I ever saw was the band that David Lee Roth assembled with Vai on guitar, Sheehan on bass and Greg Bissonette on drums. That was an incredible line up.
7. Ritchie Blackmore was the talented guitarist in Deep Purple and Rainbow. With Rainbow, his catalog of music is easily identified by the lead singer who was in the group. Which of these awesome singers was never a member of Rainbow?

Answer: Glenn Hughes

Although Glenn Hughes played as a member of Deep Purple, he was never included in the Rainbow line up. Ritchie Blackmore is an awesome guitar talent, but he has been described as a volatile artist with a very difficult personality. I would love to see a Rainbow reunion with either Turner or Bonnet on the microphone (unfortunately Dio passed away in 2010) but it appears that Blackmore is more enamored with playing Renaissance festivals with his wife in the band Blackmore's Night.
8. Tracii Guns is the gifted guitarist who has played with several heroes of the metal world. He may best be known with his work in LA Guns, but he has had stints with other bands and musicians. Which isn't one of them?

Answer: Lars Ulrich

Maybe people don't realize that the "Guns" in Guns N' Roses is none other than Tracii Guns. Tracii Guns and Axl Rose decided to merge LA Guns and Hollywood Rose to form one superband, and the two names were merged as well to create Guns N' Roses. Early members of the band included Axl on vocals, Tracii on lead guitar, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, Ole Beich on bass and Rob Gardner on the drums. Tracii also played with Nikki Sixx (of Motley Crue fame) in the band Brides of Destruction.

He also joined Michael Schenker (of Scorpions and UFO fame) in the short lived supergroup Contraband in 1991.
9. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have had several great guitarists join them as members of the group over their long and storied career. Which guitarist never was a Pepper?

Answer: Jim Martin

Jim Martin was the guitarist in Faith No More, but he never played with the Chili Peppers. Dave Navarro, best known for his being a member of Jane's Addiction, was the guitarist on the album "One Hot Minute". Hillel Slovak was the group's original guitarist and he played on two albums, "Freaky Styly" and "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan". Hillel died of a heroin overdose in 1988. Frusciante played the biggest part in the Red Hot Chili Peppers as guitarist.

He was twice in the band, once from 1988 to 1992 and again from 1997 to 2011.

He played on five albums with the band. He was replaced in 2011 by his friend Josh Klinghoffer.
10. Some guys have all the luck. Not only is Steve Morse one of the best guitarist to ever have slung an axe over his shoulder, he's also played with some of the greatest musicians in some pretty awesome bands. Which group did he never play with?

Answer: Yes

Yes has had their share of skilled guitar slingers (Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Peter Banks), but Steve Morse was never in the group. His guitar work in the Dixie Dregs is some of the best jazz fusion since John McLaughlin. He was the guitarist on Kansas' last hit single titled "All I Wanted". Morse was also the guy who permanently replaced Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple, after a brief appearance by Joe Satriani in the mix.
