Bands and Musical Acts Trivia Questions

1. In 1977, Thelma Houston charted with a a number-one hit and won a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for what song?

From Quiz
City Folk (Part 9): Musical People

Answer: Don't Leave Me This Way

Thelma Houston was born in Leland, Mississippi, on May 7, 1946. The song "Don't Leave Me This Way" was actually a cover of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes' original recording from 1975. Houston's version went to Number One on the U.S. soul singles chart. VH-1 ranked the song Number Two on their list of the Greatest Dance Songs. The city of Houston, Texas has a rich blues history. One of the most popular touring spots is Dowling Street where one can visit historic blues landmarks and hear blues music in the many bars, clubs and music venues. Blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins was a fixture in Houston for many years.

2. Who did not "B. Goode" when he landed himself three years in prison for inviting a minor Mexican girl across the border to work for him?

From Quiz Jailhouse Rock: Musicians Who Served Time

Answer: Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry, famous for song such as "Johnny B. Goode" and "Maybellene," was sentenced to three years in 1962 for violation of the Mann Act when he transported a fourteen- year-old girl across state lines. Previously, as a juvenile, Chuck Berry had served time on charges of armed robbery, including for stealing a car at gunpoint.

3. This song by the Beatles is sung by George Harrison. What is it?

From Quiz Songs not Sung by the Lead Singer

Answer: While my Guitar Gently Weeps

The Beatles released the "White Album" in 1968. It was a double album, so it had all kinds of different songs on it, and it had songs sung by all four members of the group. George Harrison wrote and sang the song "While my Guitar Gently Weeps," after returning home from India where he had been studying Transcendental Meditation. "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" has become a popular song on classic rock radio. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it 136th on their list of "500 Greatest Song of All-time."

4. This 'stoner rock' trio is primarily known for a song that is over one hour long. They are from San Jose, California. Gimme their name dude.

From Quiz (Power?) Trios

Answer: Sleep

If you have not heard Sleep's mammoth 'Dopesmoker' go and do yourself a favor. Highly influential. They formed in 1991 believe it or not, but it was not until 2003 they issued their 'Dopesmoker' epic, a number of years AFTER the band split up. Needless to say they reformed to great acclaim. Some people have called 'Dopesmoker' the heaviest, sludgiest, most wicked album album ever recorded (leaving Black Sabbath's 'Master Of Reality' release cowering in some forgotten corner.) Do you actually NEED more of a higher recommendation?

5. Which Southern rock band named their band after their strict high school physical education teacher?

From Quiz Hey! They're Not in This Band!

Answer: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd was founded in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The inspiration for the band name came from their high school physical education teacher named Leonard Skinner. Mister Skinner was known for strictly enforcing their school's policy against male students having long hair. Lynyrd Skynyrd inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

6. Which band finally achieved mainstream success with their 2003 album "Sing the Sorrow"?

From Quiz Not Much To Say

Answer: AFI

It took AFI (which stands for A Fire Inside) almost ten years to get recognized commercially. Formed in 1991 they finally cracked the Billboard 200 Album Charts with their fifth album "The Art of Drowning", which peaked at number 174. "Sing the Sorrow" followed three years later and featured the singles "Girl's Not Grey" and "Silver and Cold" which helped propel the album to platinum status. It would peak at number five on the Billboard 200 and remain in the chart for almost a year. Their next album, "Decemberunderground", featuring the single "Miss Murder" would debut at number one on the same charts. AFI are a Californian band noted for their emo/gothic rock style.

7. In 1965, this rock and roll legend received his undergraduate degree from UCLA's film school within the Theater Arts department of the College of Fine Arts. Who am I talking about?

From Quiz Rock Stars and Their Alma Maters

Answer: Jim Morrison

Jim attended several colleges before finishing up at UCLA. However, while there, Jim also studied comparative literature which was a major influence for his creative lyrics.

8. Dolores Brooks was only 15 when she sang lead for The Crystals on such sixties hits as "Then He Kissed Me" and "Da Doo Ron Ron". What was her nickname?

From Quiz Young Artists on the US Charts

Answer: LaLa

When "There's No Other (Like My Baby)" hit the charts in 1961 Dolores "LaLa" Brooks was not part of The Crystals. When Myrna Giraud left the group after the release of "He's A Rebel" Dolores "LaLa" Brooks was invited to join the group and sang lead vocals on two of the group's biggest hits. Because she was only 15 when she joined the group her mother had to sign for her to tour and a chaperone was always provided for the girl group. By the time Dolores was seven she was singing in a Gospel group. When she was performing in a school project she came to the attention of Dolores "Dee Dee" Kenniebrew's mother who invited her to join the Crystals. After the Crystals dissolved Dolores "LaLa" Brooks married a Jazz musician and moved to England. Dolores "Dee Dee" Kenniebrew and Patricia "Patsy" Wright were founding members of The Crystals. Ginger Blake sang for The Honeys.

9. He is searching for a "Heart of Gold", this Godfather of Grunge.

From Quiz Rock and Roll's Godparents

Answer: Neil Young

Nirvana and Pearl Jam are amongst the bands Neil Young influenced. Dramatically, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain quoted Young's famous lyric "It's better to burn out than fade away", in his suicide note. Young was shaken by this and reacted with the title track of "Sleeps With Angels". Paul Young is an English soul singer mostly active in the 1980s. David Crosby played with Young in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. David Tennant is a British actor famous for playing Doctor Who.
