Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did they come up with the name, "The Idea Of North"?

Answer: Not even they can remember

I attended a singing workshop in 2005 in Hobart which this group were running, and this point was made to us all right at the start - they said "Don't ask how we got our name!"
2. The guy who sings bass and percussion, amongst other fancy vocal tricks, was one of the original Ideas. True or false?

Answer: True

Andrew Piper is an amazingly talented guy. He does a lot of arranging of music for the group and along with tenor Nick Begbie is an original Idea. The group started off with Megan Corson singing alto and Trish Delaney-Brown singing soprano. Megan was replaced by Naomi Crellin between '97 and 2003 and Trish by Sally Cameron in 2007. Trish has had a baby, so maybe we'll see her back again. I saw the group with Trish in February '07, then again with Sally in August and if you weren't in the know about the change, you certainly couldn't tell by any change in music quality. Bravo!
3. The Idea's first CD, self-titled, contains a lovely rendition of the 23rd Psalm. Whose original arrangement did they adapt for this recording?

Answer: Bobby McFerrin

Bobby McFerrin rose to prominence in 1996(?) with an a cappella song called "Don't Worry, Be Happy", I can only just remember it!
4. Which song has the lyrics "dancin' with Mandela", "eating a paella", and even "he's your Rockefeller"?

Answer: Singin' A Cappella

Words by Nick Begbie and Andrew Piper, Music and Arrangement by Andrew Piper. I laughed when I first heard it and it still makes me laugh. The other phrases in the question are also lyrics in the song!
5. The Idea's third CD, titled "Here & Now", is entirely an a cappella recording.

Answer: True

I still find it hard to believe the statement in the question! When jazz legend James Morrison offered to arrange a song for them, how could they refuse? The 'degree of difficulty' must have been a new high for them, but their version of Cole Porter's "It's Alright By Me" is terrific! James Morrison also wrote the introduction for their third CD, "Here & Now".
6. The Idea of North participated in the 2003 Harmony Sweepstakes a cappella competition in California, USA. What happened to them there?

Answer: They won the whole thing

Founded in 1984, the Harmony Sweepstakes is the largest a cappella competition in the world. The Idea of North were the first international group ever to win the Sweepstakes.
7. Which animated film is the gorgeous ballad "When She Loved Me" in?

Answer: Toy Story 2

A female friend of mine heard this version only the day after watching "Toy Story 2" with her children, and she begged to play it again, right away! I could have sworn she was nearly crying too. Which was also my reaction after hearing it a few times and reading the lyrics.
8. James Morrison features again on the group's fourth CD, titled "Evidence". What instrument does James play in the song "But Not For Me" ?

Answer: Flugelhorn

The master of our local brass band had a flugelhorn on hand when I asked him about it. A very close relative of the trumpet, I'll take his word for that! "Evidence" reached number twelve on the Australian Jazz Charts.
9. The Idea's fifth CD, "The Gospel Collection" is another fully a cappella recording.

Answer: False

About half the tracks were accompanied by piano, organ, bass and drums. I checked the other tracks and couldn't definitely decide a cappella or not, so I decided, yes, it must be!
10. The Idea Of North produced a live concert DVD in 2007. What was the concert venue?

Answer: Brisbane Powerhouse

I would have liked to have been able to get to that concert, however work commitments got in the way. The other venues in the question have also been played by The Idea Of North, with me sometimes in the audience.
