Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which footballer made over 170 appearances for Leeds United between 1988 and 2004?

Answer: Alan Smith

Smith had previously stated he would never play for Manchester United, but with Leeds facing relegation and the real possibility of them entering administration, the club were forced to look for buyers. Everton and Newcastle United were both interested but wanted to pay the transfer fee in instalments, with only Manchester United offering the money up front. Smith was left with the difficult decision of moving to Leeds' bitter rivals or moving elsewhere and seeing the club he loved enter administration.

He chose to sign for Manchester United and spent three seasons with them, winning a Premier League winners medal for the 2006-07 season.
2. Who wrote the Olivier Award nominated play, "An Evening with Gary Lineker" (1991)?

Answer: Arthur Smith

Arthur Smith is one of the funniest alternative comedians the UK has to offer with his insightful monologues on life and its problems, best known for "An Evening with Gary Lineker" (1991). "An Evening with Gary Lineker" (1991) concerns a man who wants to watch the football, while his wife is trying to talk about their relationship and is very funny as well as being occasionally a little to close to reality. He has performed regularly at the Edinburgh Fringe festival since 1977 and as well as "An Evening with Gary Lineker" (1991), Smith has written several books, including "Trench Kiss" (1990) and "Pointless Hoax" (1997).
3. What is the real name of "Funky Cold Medina" (1989) singer, Tone Loc?

Answer: Anthony Smith

Tone Loc first hit the charts with "Wild Thing" (1988) before "Funky Cold Medina" (1989) took him to new heights, although chart success has been hard to find since then. His acting career has also seen him appear in movies such as the James Bond parody, "Spy Hard" (1996) and the horror movie, "They Crawl" (2001) about giant killer cockroaches.
4. Guitarist with Iron Maiden, co-writer of tracks "Flight of Icarus" (1983) and "2 Minutes to Midnight" (1984)?

Answer: Adrian Smith

Smith joined Iron Maiden in 1980, following the breakup of his band Urchin and was with the band for the release of albums such as "The Number of the Beast" (1982) and "Powerslave" (1984) up until "Somewhere in Time" (1986). He left the band in 1990 to concentrate on solo work, releasing albums with Psycho Motel as well as contributing to albums from former Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson.

In 2000 both Smith and Dickinson returned to the Iron Maiden fold, with the release of the album, "Brave New World" (2000).
5. Who was the first Scotsman to feature on an English banknote?

Answer: Adam Smith

Smith is considered by many to be the finest economist to have lived and is often referred to as "The Father of Economics". His book, "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" (1776) is seen today as one of the fundamental works in understanding classical economics.

As well as appearing on the English £20 note, first issued in 2007, Smith has also appeared, since 1981 on the £50 notes issued by the Clydesdale Bank in Scotland and a large bronze sculpture of him can be seen on Edinburgh's famed Royal Mile.
6. Which brother of the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, was first person to receive baptism by proxy after death?

Answer: Alvin Smith

While Joseph Smith is remembered for founding the Latter Day Saint movement, elder brother Alvin played quite a large part too following his death. Joseph had a vision in which he saw Alvin in the celestial kingdom which was unexpected as Alvin had died before the establishment of the church, and was therefor not baptised. Joseph then was the recipient of a revelation which decreed that those who die without hearing the gospel shall be allowed salvation through baptism by proxy after their death.

This practice continues within the church to this day.

Answer: Anna Nicole Smith

Smith was crowned Playboy Playmate of the Year in 1993 after first appearing in the magazine in 1992. When she married Marshall in 1994, there was much speculation that she was doing so for his money, but Smith always maintained this was not the case and the couple had spent two years getting to know each other, as Marshall was a frequent patron of the strip club in which she performed. Following Marshall's death in 1995, Smith faced a legal battle over her share of the estate, a case which she eventually won but which was then taken to the US Supreme Court in a case which wasn't settled until 2011, long after Smith herself had died in 2007, aged 39.

"Winger" (2013) tells the story of Ryan Dean West's journey into manhood and was rated as one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2013, while "Grasshopper Jungle" (2014), which is set in an American praying mantis apocalypse was awarded the 2014 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award.
10. In 1987 Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman started dating which 16 year old, when he himself was 50 years old?

Answer: Amanda (Mandy) Smith

Mandy Smith first met Wyman at the BPI awards in 1984, when she was 13 and he was 47. They officially started dating when she became 16, and married in 1989 when she was 18 and Wyman was 52. The marriage lasted just short of two years with Smith suffering a variety of health problems due, she claimed, to having been taking birth control pills since age 14.

In a surreal twist to the situation, Wyman's son Stephen married 46-year old Patsy Smith, Mandy Smith's mother, in 1993 (Stephen was aged 30), but this marriage also didn't last beyond two years.
