Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first relief pitcher selected to be in an all-star game was Jack Russell of the Washington Senators in 1934. Who was the first pitcher to actually pitch in an all-star game?

Answer: Mace Brown

Brown of the Pirates pitched in relief in 1938. 1934 was Russell's only selection. He went 15-5 in the season.
2. Who did Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson bump from the second, then the third position on the career list for strikeouts?

Answer: Steve Carlton

Carlton sat behind Nolan Ryan in second for a number of years, 5714-4136, until Clemens then Johnson bumped him down the list. Carlton was the second pitcher in history to throw 4000 strikeouts, second to Ryan.
3. Which pitching rule change, changed the scope of baseball in 1884?

Answer: Pitchers could now employ shoulder-high deliveries instead of waist-high deliveries

Prior to 1884, the pitcher's hands had to pass below their hips before they could release the ball. With the invent of the new overhand delivery, Charley Radbourn took immediate advantage by having a 59-12 record along with 441 strikeouts. The mound to home plate distance was only 50'.
4. Who in 1955 was the first black pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Major League history?

Answer: Sam Jones

Jones threw a no-no against the Pirates on May 12. His Cubs would still finish in sixth place. After 12 seasons, Jones had a career 102-101 record.
5. 1936 saw the first Hall of Fame inductions with five baseball greats entering the Hall. How many players were on this first list to be voted on?

Answer: 33

Two-thirds of the ballots cast were needed for selection into the Hall. The first five inductees were Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Christy Mathewson.
6. Which future Major League player had a 61-game hitting streak for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1933?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

This was a prelude to Joe's famous 56-game hitting streak as a Yankee.
7. Who was the first player in Major League history to win the Triple Crown as a switch-hitter?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Mantle in the pinstripes of New York in 1956 pulled this off. He was also in his sixth season and earned him the MVP Award. He hit 52 home runs, had 131 RBIs, and batted .353. Mantle edged out Tiger Al Kaline by two RBIs in that department.
8. Which American League team went the entire 1945 season without hitting a home run over a fence in their own home park?

Answer: Washington Senators

The Senators hit a team total of only 27 home runs in the season. This was one less than Tony Holmes' 28 of the Boston Braves hit by himself all season. Griffith Stadium did however see a home run by the Senators. It was an inside-the-park home run hit by first baseman Joe Kuhel.
9. Two pitchers set marks that nobody throughout the entire 20th century touched. The great Cy Young was the first pitcher to lose 300 games in a career. Who was the second to lose 300?

Answer: Pud Galvin

Galvin played for 15 seasons and retired in 1892. His career record was 364-310, although two losses have been in dispute since the verification of records began in 1920. Warren Spahn fell one victory short of Pud with 363, which placed Spahn in the sixth spot all-time at the time of his retirement in 1965.
10. In the 1954 World Series, which Giant delivered three separate game-winning hits in the series against the Indians?

Answer: Dusty Rhodes

This was the World Series which saw Willie Mays' historic over-the-shoulder catch of a ball off the bat of Indians' Vic Wertz. Rhodes was the series hero as two of his three game-winning hits came as a pinch-hitter. Rhodes went 4-for-6 in the series and batted .667.
