Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the final result of the 3 Test series ?

Answer: India won 1-0, with two tests drawn

England were on the verge of winning the First Test when bad light saved India with 9 wickets down in their second innings. India won the Second Test comfortably, and also had much the better of the drawn Third Test.
2. Two of the three Test matches were played in London - the first at Lord's, and the Third at the Oval. Where was the Second Test played? Now, I don't want to be robin' you of points here!

Answer: Trent Bridge, Nottingham

Yes, it was the home of Robin Hood, Nottingham! Trent Bridge has been hosting cricket matches since the 1830's, and held it's first Test match in 1899 when the visiting Australian team were matched upo against England.

The ground itself is very near to the bridge over the river Trent in Nottingham, and is also very close to the football grounds of both Nottingham Forest and Notts County.
3. How many different players appeared in the series in total? There are 11 men in a cricket team, remember.

Answer: 22

Yes, that's right - both teams fielded precisely the same 11's for all three matches. This is quite a rarity for a whole series, with injuries, loss of form and varying conditions meaning that changes in team selection are usually made at on a regular basis. It's a testament to the competitiveness of this series that both teams remained unchanged throughout it.
4. Only one player made his test debut during the series. Who was this player? His father was a well known county cricketer in his time.

Answer: Chris Tremlett

Hampshire's Chris Tremlett made his debut for England in the first Test at Lord's, and kept his place in the side throughout the series. He had made his ODI debut for England two years previously, but this was his first venture onto the full Test match stage.
5. Which opening batsman had to face the music when he was dismissed four short of a century in the first Test at Lord's?

Answer: Andrew Strauss

Strauss was dismissed for 96 (caught by Raul Dravid off the bowling of Anil Kumble) in the first innings of the Lord's test. He made 55 in the Second test, and totalled 211 runs in the whole of the series at an average of 35.16.
6. Who was the only Indian batsman to make a century in the series - though he's better known as a bowler?

Answer: Anil Kumble

Amazingly, Anil Kumble was the only Indian centurion throughout the series, accomplished in the first innings of the Third test at The Oval. It was Kumble's maiden test Century, in his 125th test. Five other Indian batsmen made 50's in the Indian first innings of 664 at The Oval (Karthik, Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman and Dhoni) - and extras also passed the 50 mark!
7. Who was the pace bowler who was the leading wicket taker in the series with 18 victims?

Answer: Zaheer Khan

Zaheer Khan had an outstanding series with the ball, taking 18 wickets at an average of 20.33 per wicket. He bowled consistently well throughout the series, taking six wickets in the First test, nine in the Second (including a series best for him of 5-75 in the second innings) and three in the final test.

Monty Panesar took 8 wickets, RP Singh took 12 - and Michael Vaughan bowled 4 overs without taking a wicket at all.
8. Only one batsman scored 2 centuries in the series - who was he? You don't have to be nuts to guess this answer!

Answer: Kevin Pietersen

As is his wont, KP scored two important centuries at critical times. His 134 in the First Test put England in a winning position - and was almost half of his team's total in the second innings of the game. His 101 in the Third Test was a match saving effort, setting up the face saving draw for England. He scored 345 runs in total in the series, at an average of 57.50.
9. Only one player passed 50 on three occasions in the series. Don't Know who? Have a guess, if you don't know initially!

Answer: Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik is a wicketkeeper, but in this series he was chosen purely as a batsman. He stepped up to the mark, scoring a fifty in each Test match, and averaging almost 44 with the bat for the series. He formed an effective opening partnership with Wasim Jaffer, where the two of them averaged well over 50 runs for the first wicket over the course of the series.
10. There was a bit of controversy during the Second test match of the series when some sweets were apparently thrown at Indian batsman Zaheer Khan. What item of confectionery got him jumping?

Answer: Jelly Beans

No one was ever sure if this was a serious attempt at gamesmanship, just a harmless bit of fun, or in fact just a case of some sweets falling out of someone's pocket.

It was the height of what proved to be quite a feisty match, with Indian bowler Sreesanth being fined for barging England captain Michael Vaughan. It didn't take any of the gloss off India's victory in the match though, and inspired Zaheer Khan to take a match winning 5 English wickets in the second innings.
