Before Joe and Ruth could officially adopt Tad, they had to deal with his biological father, Ray Gardner. Ray offered to give up his parental rights, in regards to Tad, in exchange for $15,000. Ruth wanted to pay Ray the money just to get him to go away but Joe was against the idea of "buying" Tad. Eventually, Joe and Ruth managed to adopt Tad without having to give in to Ray's monetary demands.

Answer: Ruth Martin

All the above women are rape survivors but it was Ruth that survived a brutal rape in 1978. Ray Gardner went to see Tad, one day, and this upset Tad. Ruth told Ray to leave her family alone and that she would never see Tad again. To get revenge on Ruth, Ray began to stalk her and he jumped her in a parking lot, one night, and raped her. Joe consoled Ruth, after the rape, and she decided to press charges against Ray. Ray was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
