Anna Alcott grips her husband's hand in the night as she awakens from sleep only to realize that she's supposed to be sleeping alone. Turning over in fear she watches as a cloaked figure rises from the bed and looms over her from the shadows before breaking into a run. Anna chases after the intruder, but they manage to get away, escaping into the fire stairs. Calling 911, Anna begs for someone to come, but they seem uninterested in sending anyone.

As Anna looks to the floor she sees an image on the ground-- a torn picture of her implanted embryos. Blood stains her white carpets...and her hands...as she screams in horror.

One week before the intruder appeared in Anna's apartment, she rushed to the doctor's, meeting her husband, Dexter, there an hour before the appointment to start the fertility treatment all over again. Leaving her Brooklyn Heights apartment, she stepped out of the lobby to spy an eccentrically-dressed woman standing over what appeared to be a nest. Passing close-by, Anna looked in to see a broken egg inside; a small embryo lay in the discarded bundle of sticks and twine.

Racing to the doctor's to get to her appointment on time, she emerged from the subway to find a billboard on one of the skyscrapers. She was featured on the ad; it was for her new movie, 'The Auteur'.

When she finally arrived at the office, she was let in with just enough time to change and get into the operating room. Receiving twilight anesthesia, she waited for the doctor and asked Dexter if he still loved her. After all, she couldn't get pregnancy to stick. All of it, Dexter said, would be worth it when they finally have their perfect baby.

Anna fell unconscious as the doctors prepared their equipment.

When Anna came to, she found Dr. Hill standing by her bedside alongside her husband. Avoiding a call from her agent, she headed for the door only to run into an older woman, Ms. Preecher, who scared her into brushing by.

After all, as of recently, all good things have been happening to Anna, and she should be happy. Siobhan, unfortunately, also failed to have in vitro work for her. Her joy is Anna's joy, and she's always been thankful that they met at an IVF support group and became friends.

After all, no one really got over how she died in the fire; it was hard for them too. As Anna took a seat on a park bench, Dexter pulled a spider from her hair. Returning home, Dexter and Anna found the progesterone case on the kitchen counter instead of in the fridge. Questioning Anna's state, he asked if she was up for dinner with their friends, Talia and Theo; they could cancel. She decided to go instead, opting to meet Dexter there after he checked in at work.

Anna headed to the restroom to avoid the uncomfortable conversation, taking the time to breathe and check her phone. She called up Siobhan, point-blank asking if she believed that Dexter might still be in love with Adeline. She chalked it up to hormones, of course. Weirdly, her most outlandish concern was that her eggs were "so old and dusty, she'd give birth to a spider-baby." Siobhan offered to help her raise the kid either way.

Talia stepped into the restroom during the call, apologizing to Anna for what she said about Adeline. In fact, the suggested that Anna and Adeline would've gotten along famously. She also suggested, at that time, that they switch tables because a child nearby was complaining about the menu. Why anyone would even want a child, Talia said, boggles her mind. Anna sidestepped the chat, complimenting Talia on her lipstick. Talia gave it to her. After all, she liked it so much. Before leaving the room, Anna noticed that they weren't alone in the lavatory.

That night, while Dexter slept next to her, Anna checked her phone, looking up Adeline's photo. Per the articles, Adeline Harding was a James Beard Award-winning vegan chef... and she died in a tragic kitchen fire. While checking her calendar, Anna watched as her embryo transfer appointment inexplicably moved from 11am to 12pm before her eyes. She changed her password then and there.

Anna didn't realize, but Dexter claimed they talked about it, deciding that with Andy Cohen and the embryo transfer in the morning, it'd be too much for her. She changed her mind, putting on Talia's lipstick, and heading to the gallery instead.

The next morning, on the big day, Anna nervously awaited Dr. Hill who, coming into the room, showed her a photo of her successful embryo. She could bring it with her after. Soon, she would be brought into the operating room and anesthetized, but before she could go under, she watched as Ms. Preecher, or at least a vision of her, loomed overtop of her, performing an odd ritual ending in a bloody embrace.

Anna would awaken with Dexter by her bedside, having brought her home after the procedure. He would leave her to get some rest, placing the picture of the embryo by the bed to watch over her. That night, however, she would grab for the hand in bed with her, and it wouldn't be Dexter. It would be the figure in the cloak who would escape down the fire stairs.

After calling 911, Anna finds Talia's lipstick next to the bed, worn down to the nub. Her phone goes off, indicating that a new appointment has been added to her calendar-- one telling her to look in the mirror. When she does, it bears a concerning message: DON'T DO IT, ANNA.
