Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the Doctor and Clara first entered the train, what song was being sung?

Answer: "Don't Stop Me Now"

In what the Doctor believed would be their last adventure, he took Clara for a ride on the Orient Express (in space). As they entered, he noted that it had a 1920s atmosphere. Which it sort of did, since Foxes was performing a jazz rendition of a 1970s rock song.
She was performing "Don't Stop Me Now", which was sung by Freddie Mercury of Queen and released in January 1979. At the time, it was not a major hit (#86 on the Billboard charts) but it has grown in popularity and is now one of Queen's bigger hits.
"Don't Stop Believing" was released by Journey in 1981. It reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song had a major revival in 2009 when it was performed on the pilot episode of "Glee."
"Don't Stop (Thinking about Tomorrow)" is from the 1977 Fleetwood Mac alnum "Rumors". It peaked at #3 on the Billboard 100. The campaign of Bill Clinton helped revive the song in the 1990s.
"Don't Stop the Music" is a 2007 song by Trinidadian pop star Rihanna. It was a #1 hit in Europe and Australia, and a #3 hit on the Billboard 100.
The singer was British pop star Foxes (real name: Louisa Rose Allen). She began performing in London in 2011, and has had several top 20 singles. She won a Grammy Award for "Best Dance Recording" for "Clarity" with Zedd (2014).
2. What was the first name of the young Miss Pitt?

Answer: Maisie

She told Clara her name was Maisie. Miss Pitt had a fairly bad train trip - her elderly grandmother died mysteriously, she got trapped in a vault with a strange sarcophagus and a mummy tried to kill her. And apparently, according to the Doctor, she had a bad relationship with her father.
Maisie Pitt was played by Daisy Beaumont. She has been working in both British television and film since 1998 and is probably best known for her work in "Star Stories" (2006-2008) in which Beaumont parodied celebrities.
3. What did Miss Pitt use to open the lock on the sealed door?

Answer: Shoe

She went very old school, slamming her stiletto heel into the control panel and shorting it out. Afterwards, she and Clara became trapped with a spooky looking sarcophagus. Even if she did have a sonic screwdriver, it wouldn't have been useful. The Doctor tried using his to open the door and had no luck.
4. How many seconds did people have to live once they had seen the mummy in "Mummy on the Orient Express"?

Answer: 66

It was precisely 66 seconds, which as the Doctor noted, is a strangely specific amount of time. It turned out that was how long it took the mummy to drain the energy from its victims.
Every time there was a mummy sighting, the 66 second clock would go up on the screen and would count down until the death of the latest victim.
5. Which of these was the correct order for victims of the mummy in "Mummy on the Orient Express"?

Answer: Mrs Pitt - Chef - Purser - Professor Moorhouse - Captain Quell

Mrs Pitt died at the very start of the episode, before the opening credits. The Chef was killed in the kitchen and the purser was killed in the dining car. The Professor was the fourth victim and the Captain was the fifth and final victim, and they were killed in the computer lab. The mummy's victims were played by Janet Henfrey (Mrs Pitt), David Bamber (Captain Quell) and Christopher Villiers (Professor Morehouse). Two are "Doctor Who" veterans; Christopher Villers appeared in the "The King's Demons" (1983) with the Fifth Doctor, and Janet Henfrey appeared in "The Curse of Fenric" (1989) with the Seventh Doctor.
6. How did the mummy choose its victims?

Answer: Medical status

The mummy selected the weakest people to eliminate. Mrs Pitt was selected first because she was extremely old and ill. The chef had a blood disorder, and the purser had artificial lungs. The Professor suffered from panic attacks, and the Captain suffered bouts of post traumatic stress disorder.
The Doctor determined that Miss Pitt was the next target because of all the stress she had been under. He transferred all those negative emotions to himself to become the target, which enabled the Doctor to defeat the mummy.
7. Using logic, the Doctor determined that the mummy had what profession before it became an undead energy vampire?

Answer: Soldier

The mummy turns out to be a soldier, who is fighting a perpetual war that has being going on for thousands of years. The Doctor "ends the war" by surrendering to the mummy, and ordering him to stand down. Tired after millennia of fighting, the mummy disintegrates.
Best moment may have been when the Doctor said "Are you my mummy?" which references some of the earliest moments in the reboot during "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" (2005).
The Doctor's antagonism towards soldiers and malfunctioning technology have been very common themes during Season Eight.
8. What was the name of the computer in "Mummy on the Orient Express"?

Answer: Gus

The computer was named GUS. Whether that was the name of the computer designer or an acronym for the computer system was never disclosed. The Computer says several times "call me Gus" and the name is seen on the screen as well.
HAL 9000 is the computer from "2001: A Space Odyssey" (2001) and is the benchmark that all futuristic AI computers are judged by.
WOTAN stands for the Will Operating Thought Analogue, a supercomputer the First Doctor fought in "The War Machines" (1966).
Tim was the computer on "The Tomorrow People", the 1970's ITV science-fiction series.
Veteran comedic actor John Sessions was the voice of Gus.
9. At the end of "Mummy on the Orient Express", Clara told the Doctor that she wanted to leave the TARDIS forever because she was tired of adventuring.

Answer: False

Definitely false. Clara had been pondering the decision to leave the TARDIS during the whole episode. The Doctor referred to their journey on the Orient Express (in space) as "a last hurrah." And it almost appeared as if Clara was about to leave - she lied to Danny saying that she had told the Doctor she was leaving - but at the last moment, she decided to stay.
The Doctor appeared to be glad that Clara was staying, although it's a little tough to tell with the eyebrows.
The best Clara/Doctor moment was probably when she asked "So you knew that it would be dangerous?" and the Doctor replied "No, I didn't know, but I certainly hoped."
10. Who was the director of "Mummy on the Orient Express"?

Answer: Paul Wilmshurst

Paul Wilmhurst directed "Mummy on the Orient Express". It was his second "Doctor Who" after "Kill the Moon" (2014). Wilmshurst also directed the 2014 Christmas Special. He has been working as a director since 1995.
Jamie Mathieson was the writer of "Mummy" as well as the season eight episode "Flatline" (2014). He certainly has an excellent background for "Doctor Who" as his first film was called "Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel" (2009).
John Sessions was the voice of Gus the Computer. Sessions is probably best known for his improvisational comedy work on "Who's Line is it Anyway?"
Jamie Hill was the Foretold, the guy inside the mummy costume.
