Janet grew jealous of the glamorous life her sister Natalie had, so she plotted to take over it. To do so, she lost weight and cut her hair to make herself look exactly like Natalie. She then imprisoned her in a well and left her to die.

Natalie saw a man named Malcolm by the well one day and begged him to notify the police of her disappearance. Malcolm pledged he would help her and eventually was seen at the police station. However, Malcolm was unable to get the Pine Valley Police to look into Natalie's disappearance. Janet heard this one day and taunted Natalie by claiming she dreamed of chatting with Malcolm X.

At the police station, Malcolm saw "Natalie" (it was Janet) and pointed her out as having disappeared. "Natalie" said she had no clue who Malcolm was, resulting in the police viewing Malcolm as a liar.
