Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 13, due to COVID-19 flight protocols, Angel was bumped to a flight directing her to which city while her teammate continued the race in Belize?

Answer: Cancun

With five teams still in isolation due to COVID-19, only five teams raced on from the twelfth Pit Stop of the race in Cartagena, Colombia, heading to the nation of Belize. In an interesting turn, while nine racers flew direct to Belize City, Angel was bumped on a flight to Cancun due to a COVID-19-related itinerary change. It meant that while teams (including her partner, Frankie), raced in Belize City, she would take a ride to the Mexico-Belize border, cross over, and meet her partner later in the leg.

All the other teams, in the meantime, left the airport bound for Belize Exotic Adventures at Rockstone Pond, taking the northern highway in a private car, but directing their driver with a Tomtom GPS device. Upon arriving, they had to head into the rainforest, locate a marked bag of firewood and a sack of raw cashews, roast the nuts, and unshell them to get their next clue.
2. The Road Block in Leg 13 had teams heading to a Belize City distillery to do which of these?

Answer: Clean recycled bottles

For this leg's Road Block, teams needed to decide which teammate was the thriftier one. Returning to Belize City, the selected racer visited the Travellers Liquors Distillery to aid locals in the rum industry, heading into the building and cleaning three cartons-worth of discarded rum bottles using detergent, scourers, and bottle brushes, removing all labels, markings, and expiration dates. Once all thirty-six bottles were cleaned, they could receive their next clue. Mori, Gabby, Heath, Frankie, and Jamus were selected for this task.
3. At the Belize Zoo in Leg 13, teams fed which native animal?

Answer: Tapir

As teams finished the Road Block in the late evening, racers spent the night in Belize City (spending leg money on a room at the best Western) before heading onward to Belize Zoo in La Democracia the next morning. There, teams joined the conservation program and assisted the national animal-- the tapir-- by hopping into their enclosures and cleaning them by clearing their waste pools of fecal matter. Once they cleaned out, bleached, and refilled the pool, they could get their next clue.
4. Which Detour task was completed by more teams in Leg 13 (in Belize City)?

Answer: 'Beat'

The final challenge of Leg 13 brought teams back to Belize City for either 'Heat' or 'Beat'. While 'Heat', completed by Heath and Toni and Chelsea and Jamus, involved eating twenty-five hot meat pies to receive their next clue, 'Beat' had Flick and Gabby, Pako and Mori, and Angel and Frankie learning how to play "Waltzing Matilda" on a steelpan with the Pantempters Steel Orchestra in Digi Park. Completion of either task with the proper parameters would allow them to race to the Pit Stop.

The catch, this leg, was that once teams started a Detour task, they were not allowed to swap out of it.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race at the Baron Bliss Lighthouse at the end of Leg 13?

Answer: Flick and Gabby

When racers completed their Detour tasks, they could make their way on foot to the thirteenth Pit Stop of the race on the edge of the Caribbean at the Baron Bliss Lighthouse. Chelsea and Jamus managed to beat Heath and Toni to the Pit Stop following thirty-nine meat pies (having failed their first attempt), and their perseverance resulted in their first win of the race. For placing first the pair won a trip to Tasmania from Intrepid valued at over $9,500 AUD.

At the end of a tough Detour, it was Flick and Gabby who arrived in a surprise last place finish, leaving the Detour in second-last but falling behind Angel and Frankie on the run to the mat in one of the tightest footraces to date. By a twenty-five second gap, they were eliminated from the race.
6. Leg 14 saw the reintroduction of four teams, back from their COVID-19 isolation. Who was not amongst them?

Answer: Lauren and Steph

Having been in isolation for four legs of the race, four of the five COVID-19 positive teams still competing returned in this leg as the course wound its way through Belize's Toledo district. Returning teams knew that they would need to complete a Speed Bump in this leg of the race to keep things fair for their return. Beau handed everyone their next clues at the same time and, with that, they hopped into their vehicles and made their way to the school in Santa Cruz, two hundred and sixty kilometres south.

Their next clue would be waiting with their needed gear, and with that, they helped repair and replant in the school's greenhouse to get their next clue.
7. Before taking on a Detour, returning teams had to complete a Speed Bump that had them doing which menial task in Leg 14?

Answer: Cleaning furniture

Before leaving the school in Santa Cruz, the four returning teams opened a Speed Bump clue, and for this challenge they needed to sort and clean the school's furniture, bringing ten items normally used in the classroom (like desks and chairs) out into the sun and washing them down. Though teams' clues also indicated that they would need to plant banana trees on the school property, this was not shown during the airing of this leg. Once teams cleared their furniture, they were able to collect their Detour clues and continue racing.
8. Which team, injured midway through Leg 14 (in Belize's Toledo District), was deemed unable to continue racing?

Answer: Fliss and Tottie

Fliss and Tottie, in second-to-last place running to the Detour, succumbed to injury when Fliss sprained her ankle running down the hiking trail to Cahal Pech. When the medics were called, they determined that Fliss' injury, while not a severe break, was enough to keep her from continuing on with the leg. Because of this, Fliss and Tottie's time in the race, though they barely resumed on the course, would be cut short.

They would be sent packing without heading to the next Pit Stop.
9. Which team completed the 'Solve' Detour task, solving a Mayan puzzle in Leg 14?

Answer: Kelly and Georgia

When teams headed out from Santa Cruz they hopped into their vehicles and commenced one of two Detour options. In 'Score', teams had to drive themselves to San Ignacio to play the Mayan sport of pok-a-tok, essentially a cross between football and basketball. Teams had to play by the rules and score a goal on the court by passing their ball through the raised basket with any body part except for their hands, but they would only have six attempts to do so or, else, head to the back of any formed line. Pako and Mori, Heath and Toni, Angel and Frankie, Chelsea and Jamus, and Jodie and Claire finished this task.

Teams opting out of the 'Score' Detour task could, instead, have gone for 'Solve', taking them to the other side of Cahal Pech to complete a Mayan puzzle of thirty-six movable wooden pieces. Each piece would feature Mayan numbers, and teams would have to fill in the puzzle not unlike a 6x6 Sudoku puzzle, avoiding duplicates in the same horizontal or vertical (or, in this case, also diagonal) row or column. Kelly and Georgia and Tiffany and Cynthia went for this one.
10. Which team was last to check in at the Pit Stop at Xunantunich at the end of Leg 14?

Answer: Jodie and Christie

When teams finished their Detours, they had one more task to complete, and it sent them to the Hawkesworth Bridge to canoe down the Macal River. Along the way they would collect eighteen engraved puzzle pieces that they could arrange in order to replicate a Mayan calendar, and if they got it right, they would get their clue to the next Pit Stop, the pyramids at the archaeological site at Xunantunich.

Heath and Toni, who emerged from the Mayan calendar task in first, crossed the river and climbed the pyramid first, landing on the mat to claim their second win of the race. For their victory, they won a three-night stay at a five-star Balinese resort. Though Jodie and Claire let Tiffany and Cynthia land on the mat before them, no one else was eliminated this leg on account on the injury incurred by Fliss and Tottie.
11. At the start of Leg 15, the final team in COVID-19 isolation returned to the race course. This meant that how many teams competed in the leg in Caye Caulker?

Answer: Eight

With the return of Steph and Lauren, all teams were reunited following some pairings' mandatory quarantines (from all the way back in Turkey at the end of Leg 9). With the medvac elimination of Fliss and Tottie in Leg 14, this meant Steph and Lauren rejoined seven teams still competing for the win. Additionally, the cop couple were told that they would need to complete a Speed Bump to compensate for legs missed, and that would appear later on the leg.

In the meantime, all racers headed by one of two boats to the island town of Caye Caulker where they could locate a marked pier, feed the local tarpon by hand, and receive their next clue.
12. Visiting Shark Ray Alley in Belize, one team member had to dive underwater to find which of these?

Answer: Conch shell

After feeding the tarpon, teams opened a Road Block clue asking 'who wants to come out of their shell?' And for this task, Angel, Pako, Kelly, Heath, Jamus, Lauren, Cynthia, and Jodie had to take a ride out onto the Belize Barrier Reef, specifically to Shark Ray Alley, where they needed to dive amongst sharks to search the reef floor for specifically-marked red-and-yellow conch shells. If they could surface with one they could trade it for their next clue.
13. In the 'Twirl It' Detour task in Leg 15, teams members worked with which of these?

Answer: Hair

Resurfacing for their Detour, teams returned to the shore and chose between 'Twirl It' or 'Twerk It', each taking on cultural to-dos on the Belize coast. In 'Twirl It', teams visited Da Real Macaw where they needed to braid a woman's hair into eight tight cornrow braids, finishing them with four yellow-and-red beads to get their next clue. 'Twerk It', however, sent teams to The Lazy Lizard where teams learned and performed a traditional soca dance.

The Detour selections were made equally with 'Twirl It' being done by Kelly and Georgia, Lauren and Steph, Tiffany and Cynthia, and Jodie and Claire and 'Twerk It' being done by Heath and Toni, Pako and Mori, Chelsea and Jamus, and Angel and Frankie.
14. During the second Road Block task in Leg 15, teams had to do which of the following 'on island time'?

Answer: Ride a bike

Teams completing their Detour tasks opened a second Road Block clue when they were done, and it meant heading to Il Pellicano Cucina Italiana where the team members needed to 'be on Caye Caulker time'. For this task, Mori, Toni, Frankie, Chelsea, Tiffany, Steph, Kelly, and Jodie were required to take it slowly, riding a bike for at least two and a half minutes down a bumpy road while carrying coconuts. If they dropped the coconuts, touched the ground, or arrived at the finish line early, they would need to start the course over.

Additionally, as they rejoined the race in this leg, Lauren and Steph were required to complete the leg with a Speed Bump that asked them to complete the Road Block a second time, this time with the non-participating racer handling the bike.
15. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 15 in Caye Caulker?

Answer: Jodie and Claire

Teams completing the Road Block could head onward to their next Pit Stop by crossing the infamous Split, a body of water cutting between North and South Caye Caulker, and if they made it to Northside Beach Bar they could step on the Pit Stop mat and find out their placement for the fifteenth leg of the race.

Heath and Toni located Beau first, narrowly beating Pako and Mori to take their second consecutive win (and third of the race). They won two Samsung Frame TVs for their win this time around. The end of the leg saw Lauren and Steph and Jodie and Claire taking the same ferry across the Split, but after two legs at the back of the pack, Jodie and Claire were eliminated in eighth place overall.
