Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Joey wakes up at the beginning of the episode, Joe is watching him. What does Joey first say to Joe?

Answer: Nothing

Joey wakes up to see Joe Carroll sitting on a chair in the corner of his room, watching him. Now, remember, Joe was incarcerated when Joey was just a baby so Joey has no memories of Joe other than the stories he's heard, all of which are probably not casting Joe in the most favourable light. Joe tries to connect with Joey, however, Joey remains mum. Joe is upset that Joey is giving him the silent treatment, but, he thinks that with time, Joey will open up to him.
2. There is a new agent running the show for the FBI; what is his last name?

Answer: Donovan

Nick Donovan was appointed by the FBI Director himself to run the investigation. The FBI was publicly embarrassed by Joe Carroll's second escape from jail in as many months and Donovan was sent to provide damage control and a bit of discipline to the team. However, the tall, black, imposing agent comes off as rather arrogant and full of himself, as well as being a self-proclaimed control freak. He wants every decision in the investigation to be run through him, and he clips Ryan Hardy's abilities a bit by making it known that he's just a consultant, not an agent.

Donovan is played by Mike Colter, possibly best know thus far for his role on the television show "Ringer".
3. The FBI has a prisoner in custody who won't talk to anybody but Ryan Hardy. Donovan agrees to let Hardy interrogate him, but only if Donovan can sit in. In the interrogation, the prisoner, David, says some cryptic remarks. Which serial killer does Hardy point out that David is paraphrasing?

Answer: Ted Bundy

David, the follower of Joe Carroll taken prisoner at the mall in the previous episode, only agrees to talk to Ryan Hardy, so Hardy and Donovan go in to interrogate him. David gives a speech about how all the followers could be anybody, and Hardy remarks that he's "paraphrasing Ted Bundy, rather badly".

David goes on and starts ranting a bit, "Hold close your fear. It is all that you know when you take your last breath".
Hardy responds to that, "Wow, that is creepy".

David, obviously fearing that they will eventually get him to talk, then bites into his hand and starts convulsing. Apparently, he had a cyanide capsule embedded there and he preferred suicide to talking.
4. Finally, we get to meet the mysterious Roderick. What is his real-world job?

Answer: Sheriff

As Emma and Joe Carroll are standing outside the cult headquarters, a police jeep pulls up to the house, light flashing, bells, whistles, the whole shebang. Carroll looks worried for a second, but, out of the car steps a familiar face to him, his friend Roderick. Roderick, once a student of Carroll's, is now the sheriff of a small town, a position that carries with it some responsibility, like the ability to decide what kind of side he wants with his meal. Roderick goes with the potato salad.
5. Why does Roderick 'owe' Joe Carroll?

Answer: Carroll took the fall for two murders committed by Roderick.

Not only was Joe Carroll Roderick's teacher in university, but Carroll also taught Roderick to murder and to do it with style, Joe's style. Roderick must have committed two of the campus murders on his own, but when Carroll was caught, he took the fall for them knowing full well that Roderick had committed them. Indeed, Carroll probably supervised.

Roderick felt that he owed Carroll and set up the cult's manse for them, and he still feels that he owes Carroll.
6. Why is Agent Mike Weston sent home by the new FBI lead agent?

Answer: For hacking into his email

Agent Mike Weston is a bit of a computer genius, and, when Donovan doesn't share his information with the rest of the investigation team, Ryan Hardy convinces Weston that it would be a good idea to hack into Donovan's email. This turns out to be a big mistake because Donovan finds out, and he knows that there's only one agent with the know-how and the naivete to actually do it. Weston gets sent home by Donovan.

Agent Parker was luckily there and she tells Mike to go back to the motel rather than home and await further instructions from her.
7. Mike is taken hostage by some of Joe Carroll's followers and is forced to fight Charlie. Which is *not* one of the weapons he fights Charlie with?

Answer: chains

Mike is captured for information, but, when he doesn't give it up and says instead that he doesn't know, Roderick forces him to go a round with Charlie. Charlie and Mike go at it in the first round with fists, in the second round with metal pipes, and in the last round with knives. Charlie beats Mike resoundingly, but, Mike doesn't give up the information that Roderick wants. Now, remember, Charlie was in the army and obviously has some training in hand-to-hand combat and all kinds of weapons, but, Mike is a graduate of the FBI academy, so, what do they teach them there? Knitting and macramé?
8. Despite his protests, does Mike actually know Claire's location?

Answer: Yes

Roderick desperately wants to continue proving himself to Joe Carroll and thinks that Agent Mike Weston holds the key to her location. In fact, afterwards we learn that Weston is the *only* person who actually knowa where Claire is being kept hidden, and only his mental toughness was what kept him from spilling the beans.
9. Who offers their life as an apology to Joe Carroll?

Answer: Charlie

Charlie has, in his own eyes, failed Joe Carroll twice, once when trying to abduct Claire and now again with the Mike Weston fiasco. He offers his own life as an apology to Carroll and he says that he only wants his life to mean something. Carroll seems touched by this gesture, kisses Charlie on the cheek, and tells him that his life will always mean something. Carroll then slices Charlie open with Charlie's own knife. Luckily, Louise has put down a tarp on the carpet so that it won't get stained.
10. Does Joe Carroll, at any point in this episode, succumb to Emma's charms?

Answer: Yes

Emma tries once, in the middle of the episode, to seduce Joe Carroll, but she is rejected by him as he claims to love his wife. Towards the end of the episode, after Carroll kills Charlie, Emma tries again, everyone getting a rush from the killing, and when Carroll says that he loves his wife, Emma's response is that Claire isn't there.

I think that there's something very sexual to Joe about killing, especially with a knife. He feels an irresistible rush after taking Charlie's life and he feels drawn to Emma. I suspect that Emma has long been attracted to Carroll, and he's now feeding into her desires.
