1. Let's start with the basics. Wright State University was founded after the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur in 1967. Can you tell me where Wright State is located?

Wright State University is located in Dayton, Ohio, the same city that the Wright brothers lived and built their design for the first aircraft. Kittyhawk was where the first flight took place, Millville, Indiana is where Wilbur Wright was born and Richmond is where the Wright family lived before moving back to Dayton in 1884. WSU is just minutes from Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the Air Force museum. Wright State was created in 1964 and was known as the Dayton campus of Ohio State and Miami University.

In 1967, it gained enough students to be considered a university of its own. It was then given the name Wright State University.

2. The Wright State colors are green and gold. Though Wright State doesn't have a football team like some colleges, they do offer a variety of other sports, like basketball, soccer and tennis. What is the Wright State nickname?

Answer: Raiders

The Wright State Raiders do not have football, but are an NCAA Division I school in basketball. Basketball is the biggest draw for Raider students and fans. WSU also has baseball, softball, volleyball and a very good swimming and diving team, consistently ranked in the top of the nation every year.

The Raiders also have a hockey team which is consistently very good. WSU does offer football in intramural clubs, but does not have an actual team.

3. Wright State was founded in 1967 and had just one building for academics for a few years. WSU also did not have dorm rooms until 1970. The first residence hall Wright State had is named what?

Answer: Hamilton Hall

Hamilton Hall was built in 1970, three years after WSU was founded. Hamilton Hall is known among its residents as "The Ham" and community events are often depicted by a pig for this reason. The Ham was the only residential community at Wright State for around 10 years, until "The Woods" community was built and opened in 1980.

The campus has added more residence communities over the years including College Park, University Park, Forest Lane, and the Honors dorms. However Hamilton Hall is still the only traditional dorm setting. Every other residential area is in the form of apartment style buildings. Even though Wright State is largely a commuter school, with between 3-6 thousand on average being commuting students, WSU still has problems with adequate housing for its residents because of growing enrollment.

4. The first building that was created for Wright State was named after one of the founders of Wright State. Over the years other buildings were added and the campus had four buildings that were collectively known as the "Founders Quadrangle." Which of these is NOT one of the buildings of "The Quad?"

Answer: Rike Hall

The first building WSU built was Allyn Hall which is named after one of Wright State's founders, Stanley Allyn. Oelman Hall is named after Robert Oelman, another WSU founder and is the home to the psychology department at Wright State. Fawcett Hall is named after Novice Fawcett, who was the president of Ohio State University at the time of Wright State's creation.

The other building on the Quadrangle is Millet Hall which is named after John Millet, and is the home of WSU's English department and Sociology and Anthropology department. All four men were instrumental in Wright State's founding. Rike Hall is not in the "Founder's Quadrangle" but was added in the 1980's and is the home to Wright State's college of Business.

5. Wright State University may not be a well known university, but there are a few things that WSU prides itself on. For instance, the school of medicine at WSU is very competitive and of the thousands that apply, those that get in are fewer than 150. The athletic training program is also very competitive at Wright State. The college of business has been recognized over the years as being one of the 300 best business schools in the country. Who is the college of business named after?

Answer: Raj Soin

The Raj and Indu Soin college of business was given its name in 2000. Soin was a well known and respected businessman and contributor to Wright State academics. Fritz and Dolores Russ were major contributors to the Engineering major at WSU and the engineering building is named in their honor. Paul Lawrence Dunbar was a friend of the Wright brothers and made contributions to their work. For this reason Wright State University named its library after him. Frederick White was a founder of Wright State and was an interim President from 1972-1973. White Hall is named after him and is the center for most of Wright State's medical education and research.

6. Anybody hungry? Wright State University provides students with plenty of dining options. In the Student Union there is the main dining area with a more classic and homestyle feel. Another option students have is a fast food area known as "The Hangar." It offers students choices like Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Burger King and, Skyline Chili. Where is "The Hangar" located?

Answer: Allyn Hall

There is an area attached to Allyn Hall which houses "The Hangar." Many students prefer this area not just because of food choices, but also because of its convenient location. Many students will go there in between classes. It is easily accessible from anywhere on campus and provides students with a quick bite to eat before they have to rush to their next class. During the warmer times of the year, students will sit outside the Hangar and enjoy the weather.

There are also fountains just outside for students to enjoy when it isn't too cold outside.

There is also an area surrounding the Hangar known as "The Moat." That's exactly what it is: a moat that surrounds the entire outside of the Hangar. Sometimes student groups will swim or have activities in the moat, but most often, students will just sit next to it and enjoy the water.

7. Greek life at Wright State is a popular aspect of the university. Like most colleges, WSU offers many different fraternity and sorority choices for students who are interested. Many of them have names that one might expect: Delta Zeta, Alpha Sigma and the like. However, there is one group on campus that is the other way around. Chi Alpha is a non-Greek organization, even though they have a Greek name. Can you tell me what kind of an organization Chi Alpha is?

Answer: Christian

Chi Alpha is a Christian based organization that typically meets Wednesday nights. Its members actually have their own group apartment just off campus that they share. They encourage high group involvement and are considered by many on campus to be almost radical in their stand.

Many do not get involved because they feel the group is a little too radical. But Chi Alpha continues to grow stronger and their message is always the same. Wright State has shown its diversity in many different campus groups and Chi Alpha is no exception.

8. Wright State also has many services on campus to help students and make college life a little easier. Legal services for example are offered to students for just 8 dollars for a quarter/semester. Wright State also has its own radio station, which is run mostly by students, typically communication majors. WSU also has its own newspaper which is printed once a week or so. What is the name of Wright State's student newspaper?

Answer: The Guardian

Just like Wright State's radio station, The Guardian is run mostly by students. On average the newspaper is printed once a week, but every once in a while it will only print one in a month, depending on how busy the campus events are. There are a few times the Guardian will post videos to the Internet to give students a variety in how they get their campus news.

9. Wright State University prides itself in accepting cultural differences. The diversity seen at WSU is unparalleled to other colleges in the state. People are accepting of others and the differences are embraced. There is one group that is usually overlooked by most colleges: the disabled. True or false: Wright State is well known for their disability friendliness and accessibility?

Answer: True

WSU is very handicap accessible, especially in comparison to most other colleges in the country. Wright State has power operated doors for people in wheelchairs and academic assistance for physically and mentally challenged. For those that need personal assistance at home or for everyday needs, WSU also offers plenty of personal aids that can be hired and utilized. Wright State also gives students classroom accommodations, like captionists for hearing impaired, extended time on tests for those that need it, and even note takers and test readers. Wheelchairs are extremely common and seeing-eye dogs for the blind are also seen often.

10. We've reached the end of our journey through Wright State University and we've covered just about everything we can. The only main point of WSU that hasn't been mentioned is the sports arena. Yes, WSU has its own baseball and softball fields, its own pool and recreation center, but where do they play their basketball games?

Answer: The Nutter Center

The Ervin J. Nutter Center is the home of the Wright State basketball teams. The Nutter Center also hosts many different concerts, including Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Blue Man Group. It even holds some classes that are offered to WSU students. It's just down the road from Wright State, and is walking distance from campus. Students are admitted to Wright State games at the Nutter Center for free or at a discount. Hara Arena is in the Dayton area and is home to the Wright State hockey team, as well as the Dayton Gems, a CHL hockey team. Value City Arena is home of the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team in Columbus. Nationwide Arena is also in Columbus and is home to the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey team.
