Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ivanhoe was disinherited by his father because of his allegiance to what ruler?

Answer: King Richard of England

Though it had been over 100 years since the Norman Conquest, Cedric felt that his son was betraying the Saxons, siding with the Norman king. That man could hold a grudge! (John became king after Richard's death.)
2. What is Ivanhoe's first name?

Answer: Wilfred

A fine old Anglo-Saxon name, I'm sure.
3. After his return from the Crusades, who provided Ivanhoe with armor and a horse?

Answer: Isaac of York

In reward for warning him of a robbery plot, Isaac ordered that Ivanhoe be given these things in order to compete in a tournament.
4. What is the true identity of the Black Knight?

Answer: King Richard

Richard had been held captive while attempting to return from the Holy Land. He escaped and was able to sneak back into the country before Prince John knew. (My rant: Richard is known as a heroic figure, but I don't like him at all -- he conspired against his father, spent a total of only 6 months of his ten-year reign in England, left it to founder under his brother John's rule, and neglected his poor wife, Berengaria of Navarre, terribly. That lovely lady, however, stayed faithful to him throughout their awful marriage and entered a convent upon his death. I suppose he was a great warrior, but it would seem much more noble to me to take care of his people and treat his wife a little more decently.

There. I feel better now.)
5. When Rowena, Rebecca, etc. were kidnapped, to whose castle were they taken?

Answer: Front-de-Boeuf

Torquilstone Castle had been Ivanhoe's until Prince John handed it over to Front-de-Boeuf. (I knew it wasn't a real translation, but I always thought of him as "Front of Beef"! I recently learned that his name means "Face of an Ox." And it serves him right.)
6. Who is a Knight Templar?

Answer: Brian deBois-Guilbert

They were a monastic military order formed to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. As with many other things, something is begun with good intentions, but ends up as something else altogether.
7. Rebecca was put on trial by the Knights Templar. Of what crime was she accused?

Answer: witchcraft

The Knights decided that surely it was witchcraft leading Bois-Guilbert astray. Couldn't be that he was a hypocrite or a creep!
8. Richard's nickname was "Lionheart." What was John's nickname?

Answer: Lackland

The youngest of five sons, there wasn't any land left for him. But he wasn't bitter or anything...;)
9. Who did Cedric want to see as king of England?

Answer: Athelstane

Athelstane had royal Saxon blood. Cedric hoped to marry him to his (Cedric's) ward Rowena, also of royal Saxon blood. He wanted a Saxon on the throne, even though Athelstane was woefully incompetent. (It's kind of like how some people feel about their chosen political party candidates!)
10. Athelstane was killed during the battle at Torquilstone Castle.

Answer: False

Seems to be a weakness in the story. Everybody thinks he's dead and carries him back to his castle for burial. Suddenly he "wakes up". Guess he was only "mostly dead," like Westley in "The Princess Bride".
11. During her imprisonment at Torquilstone Castle, who receives a marriage "proposal"?

Answer: Rowena

DeBracy strongly suggests that Rowena marry him. He threatens to "off" several people if she refuses. He eventually begins to respect her noble character and wishes she would accept him of her own will. Bois-Guilbert "proposes" to Rebecca, but marriage isn't part of the deal. He is a monk, after all!
12. Who does Ivanhoe marry?

Answer: Rowena

He was very attracted to the beautiful and kind Rebecca but would not marry her because of her Jewish faith. He had been in love with Rowena for many years anyway.
13. "Ivanhoe" was written in the 19th century.

Answer: True

It was published in 1820.
14. Of the following knights, who is most fortunate by the end?

Answer: De Bracy

Front-de-Boeuf dies in his castle when it is set on fire. Bois-Guilbert dies as a result of his tortured love for Rebecca. DeBracy is released by Richard and heads for France. (Confession time: My introduction to "Ivanhoe" was the 1982 made-for-TV movie. DeBracy was played by Stuart Wilson, who I thought was quite gorgeous (Ivan who?). I've had a soft spot for DeBracy ever since.)
15. In my little town, there's a small restaurant, somewhat famous for their wide selection of ice cream sundaes and milkshakes. What is the name of this restaurant? (And, yes, it's related to the topic!)

Answer: Ivanhoe's

Mmmmmm...ice cream...
