Born in Norway, Miller, was a sailor at the age of 14 years old. His main objective for the air mail service was to scope out new flying routes in 1920.
3. The D.H.4 was a workhorse for the U.S. Air Mail Service in the early 1920s. Who built this 400hp airplane?

Answer: Britain

This 1916 built aircraft saw military duty in France, Belgium, and Russia, before being used for U.S. air mail delivery. The airplane was designed by Sir Geoffrey de Haviland.
4. What was the cost of the first U.S. Air Mail stamp?

The first stamp depicted an inverted 'Jenny' (Curtis-built JN-4) aircraft with red and white stamping on it.
5. From the 1920s-1930s, all U.S. air mail stamps were triangular in shape.

Answer: False

They were all either round or square. Iceland had a triangular blue stamp that the United States initially would not honor in the country.
6. Which of the following was a U.S. Air Mail flyer?

Answer: Charles Lindbergh

One year before his famous transcontinental flight, Lindbergh jumped from his fuel-low aircraft and parachuted to earth. His aircraft circled around and almost hit him in-flight in 1926.
7. Which actor's grandfather flew U.S. air mail as a contractor in 1926?

Answer: Jim Varney

Walter T. Varney flew a 435 mile track between Nevada and Washington, with his own Varney Airlines.
8. Of the following, who wrote the first letter to be carried on the USA's first regularly scheduled airmail service?

Answer: Woodrow Wilson

President Wilson's letter was written to the Honorable T.H. Patten in New York. Wilson signed the outside of the letter, stamped May 15, 1918.
9. In 1932, aircraft landed on moving trucks, were loaded with mail, then took off again.

Answer: False

This never happened. Aircraft did test retrieving mail bags in-flight. Similar to moving trains snatching mail bags, the aircraft would hang a cable and hook below the aircraft, and fly over pick up points. This objective did not last long.
10. In 1925, private contractors began moving air mail in mass quantities at different air routes. Which manufacture built this first batch of company-owned aircraft to deliver mail?

Answer: Douglas

The Douglas M-2 was an offspring of the earlier made de Haviland D.H.4. These were single-engined airplanes with a very rearward cockpit and a large forward compartment for mail.
