After guest starring on several sitcoms, including "Good Times" and "The Jeffersons", he was cast as Arnold Jackson on the popular 1970s/80s sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes", at the age of 10. At the time, Coleman was less then four feet tall due to a kidney ailment. Coleman was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood until the show was cancelled in 1986. The 18 year-old Coleman had difficulty gaining new parts since casting directors only wanted him to play a kid. In addition, he accused his parents of mismanaging his earnings from the series and sued them in 1989. He won the case in 1993, but filed for bankruptcy six years later.

After winning his seat at the House of Representatives he remained there for four terms and narrowly lost his bid to become Governor of Iowa by four percentage points in 1994. After his stint as Siegfried in "Get Smart" (1965) Bernie Kopell played Dr. Bricker on "The Love Boat". Theodore "Ted" William Lange was cast as the bartender on "The Love Boat" and Gavin MacLeod played Captain Merrill Stubing.
