Greek Myth Trivia Questions

1. The first mythical Greek tells you, "I gave Daddy a massive headache!"

From Quiz
Greek Mythical Masquerade Mixer 9 for 10

Answer: Athena

Legend has it that Zeus impregnated Metis and then decided to eat her. If that doesn't sound weird enough, soon after, Zeus is complaining of a headache, and low and behold Athena pops out of his head as a full adult! Yeah, that makes sense, right? The other popular myth is that she has no mother at all and just popped out of Zeus' head. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war. I didn't realize those two topics went together...but they do for the ancient Greeks!

2. Who was the leader of the Titans who overthrew his father Uranus with the help of his mother Gaia?

From Quiz 9 for 10 - Greek Myth

Answer: Cronus

Cronus was jealous of Uranus' power as ruler of the universe. Uranus had alienated his wife Gaia by hiding away their children, whom he could not abide, deep inside the earth. It was Gaia who constructed the stone sickle with which Cronus castrated his father. In the fullness of time, Cronus was in turn overthrown by his son Zeus.

3. Who was the counterpart of Scylla?

From Quiz Legendary Creatures of Greek Mythology

Answer: Charybdis

Charybdis was the daughter of Poseidon and Gaia; in some myths Scylla was her sister. They both occupied a narrow strait; if sailors were to avoid Charybdis, they still had to get past Scylla, which could prove a difficult task!

4. King Minos prayed to Poseidon for support in his struggle for the throne of Crete. What did Poseidon send him?

From Quiz Meet the Minotaur

Answer: The Cretan Bull

When the beautiful, white Cretan Bull came to Minos from the sea, it was seen as a sign of favour and Minos was awarded sovereignty.

5. What Greek god is famous for making humans (and sometimes gods) fall in love?

From Quiz Greek Spirits

Answer: Eros

Eros is the god of desire, and of course, is the source of the word erotic. There are conflicting stories about the origins of Eros. Some sources say he was primordial, one of the original gods, while other sources state he is the son of Aphrodite. The most famous story about Eros involves Psyche, the most beautiful woman in the world, and their rocky path to love. In Roman mythology, Eros is known as Cupid.

6. Which Greek goddess sent a wild boar to kill Adonis because she was jealous of his superior hunting skills?

From Quiz 9 for 10 Greek Mythological Figures

Answer: Artemis

The goddess of the hunt, Artemis, is the Greek equivalent of the Roman goddess Diana. Among her many feats is supposedly helping her mother give birth to her own twin brother Apollo!

7. What is Hera's best known characteristic?

From Quiz Getting to Know Greek Mythology

Answer: Jealousy

Most stories describe Hera as vengeful and jealous. One of her more well known stories is when she mercilessly pursued Hercules and made completing his tasks even more difficult.

8. Who did Orpheus try to rescue from the Underworld?

From Quiz Think You Know Greek Mythology?

Answer: Eurydice

When Orpheus' wife, Eurydice, died as a result of a snake bite, Orpheus used his musical talent to charm Hades and Persephone into giving him back Eurydice.

9. Most demigods/gods use a Drachma to contact this goddess.

From Quiz Greek Mythology 101

Answer: Iris

Iris is not recognized as much as Hermes for being a messenger. Iris is also considered as the rainbow goddess.

10. Who is the supreme ruler of the gods who defeated his father Cronus, and whose weapon is the thunderbolt?

From Quiz Miscellaneous Myths

Answer: Zeus

Zeus is the ruler of the sky and rain. He is the ruler of Mount Olympus and the youngest son of Cronus and Rhea. Zeus had many affairs as well as a number of wives, but once he fell in love with Hera, she became his permanent wife, who avenged herself his many subsequent affairs by punishing the poor women.

11. Who was the mother of the Muses?

From Quiz Greek Mythology

Answer: Mnemosyne

Mnemosyne, the mother of the Muses, was the Titaness of Memory, there are few legends about Mnemosyne. The Muses, her daughters, were the spirits or goddesses of literature and the arts.

12. Who taught viticulture (the cultivation of grapes) and viniculture (the secrets of winemaking) to ancient Athenians?

From Quiz Ten Myths from Ancient Greece

Answer: Icarius, an Athenean aristocrat, father of Erigone

During Pandion's reign, Dionysus visited Attica and became a good friend of Icarius, who was cordial towards the God and gave him residence. Icarius learned from Dionysus all the secrets of viticulture and the making of wine, which he started teaching to the Atheneans. During that visit the Wine God had a love affair with Icarius' daughter, Erigone, and gave her a son, Staphylus. Unfortunately Erigone had a very tragic end. Dionysus had given Icarius some pretty strong wine as a gift. When Icarius tasted it he liked it so much that he immediately went out to the fields with his chariot to share it with his shepherds. They all drank from it, became very intoxicated and passed out. When they woke up, they thought that Icarius had tried to poison them, so they hunted him down and killed him. Icarius' dog alerted Erigone and led her to her father's unburied corpse. Erigone, devastated, buried her father and then hanged herself from a tree, above his grave.

13. Name the hellhound guarding the gates of Hades making sure only the spirits of the dead could enter and none of them could exit.

From Quiz Creatures of Greek Mythology

Answer: Cerberus

Cerberus was a three headed dog with a snake for a tail. Heracles wrestled him into submission in his 12th and last Labor which was to capture Cerberus.
