Beasts of Myth Trivia Questions

1. One of the best known creatures in classical mythology is this white stallion with wings that ultimately became a constellation. What is its name?

From Quiz
Fantastic Beasts That You Can't Find, Part III

Answer: Pegasus

Sired by Poseidon and foaled by Medusa, Pegasus brought thunderbolts to Zeus. Captured by the Greek hero Bellerophon with the help of Athena, he permitted Bellerophon to ride him to defeat the Chimera. Ultimately, Zeus transformed him into the constellation Pegasus.

2. What famous creature from classical mythology has the lower body of a horse and the upper body of a human?

From Quiz Fantastic Beasts That You Can't Find, Part II

Answer: Centaur

In classical myth, centaurs are often considered as powerful, untamed creatures. In one myth, for instance, Caeneus, a Lapith hero invulnerable to traditional weapons, was beaten into the ground by centaurs using tree branches and rocks.

3. In classical mythology, a dog, usually with three heads and often called the hell hound, guarded the entrance to the underworld. What was its name?

From Quiz Fantastic Beasts That You Can't Find

Answer: Cerberus

Cerberus ate only live meat. That allowed him to admit dead spirits to enter (but not leave) the underworld, and to prevent live beings from entering. As his twelfth labor, Hercules was assigned to capture Cerberus. He did so, and brought the dog to the surface. However, Cerberus soon escaped and returned to his guard duty.

4. Mermaids are often misidentified or incorrectly considered to be the same creature as sirens. What is the main difference between these two creatures?

From Quiz Mermaids and Mermen

Answer: Mermaids are closer to fish while Sirens are closer to birds

Sirens are often incorrectly depicted with scales and fish tails, especially in modern interpretations. However, Sirens, which are of Greek origin, are described as having wings in Homer's "Odyssey". Homer also says that Sirens, although they lived near the sea and lured sailors, are not sea creatures. Mermaids, however, are significantly more fishlike with their scaled tails and aquatic habitat.

5. Take one whole lion, fierce and strong Goat in the middle will belong Snake tail provides a nasty bite This threesome will cause quite a fright While breathing fire hot and red What monster did the old Greeks dread?

From Quiz Magical Beasts and How to Assemble Them

Answer: chimera

The chimera is a basic creation, so much so that 'chimera' can be used to refer to anything with grossly disparate parts. The original Greek conjuration of a chimera was nothing fancy, merely a goat's head combined with a lion that had a snake for a tail. Oh, and it breathes fire. Though the goat's head sprang from the middle of the original chimera, modern conjurations of this monster prefer bringing both main heads to its front. They're not always picky about what types of heads they use either!

6. Found in Scottish mythology, which ocean dweller can change into a human while on land?

From Quiz Mythological Mish-Mash

Answer: selkie

Known as "Seal Women", selkies could shed their seal-skins and emerge on land as humans. They took a big risk doing this, as they would have to leave their skins on the beach. If a human found the skins and hid them, the selkies would be forced to remain in their human forms until they found their lost skins. Found in Greek mythology, Empousai were female vampires. Mantine and Golurk are Pokémon characters.

7. What is the meaning of the name "Polyphemus"?

From Quiz A Blind Eye

Answer: Much spoken of

The name "Polyphemus" also stands for famous. Very appropriate name - he has appeared in Homer's "Odyssey", Virgil's "Aeneid", and Ovid's "Metamorphoses", as well as Renaissance paintings. The title of "Storm giant" goes to the terrible monster, Typhon.

8. According to the medieval bestiary, the cockatrice is a two-legged dragon with the head of what animal?

From Quiz The Cockatrice Compendium

Answer: Rooster

Pliny the Elder describes them as very small, perhaps 12 inches long.

9. Many Greek mythological beasts are half human and half... something else. What is the other half of a centaur?

From Quiz Centaur's In Charge

Answer: Horse

The centaur is a creature that has the upper body and torso of a human and the body of a horse. The Minotaur is the half-human half-bull. A half-human half-goat creature is known as a satyr. Finally, the half-human half-donkey is known as an onocentaur.

The creature allegedly was first sighted in Puerto Rico in the early 90s, but in the last few years, sightings have been claimed nearly all over the world. Recently there have been a few sightings in Texas, but when the farmers have killed them and had the bodies analyzed, their DNA turned out to be of coyotes with severe cases of mange.

15. When observing their long-armed, bloated, Aboriginal cousin, which has the face of a dog and the body of a human, Werewolves are usually reassured about their own physical appearance. Which mythical creature is being discussed here?

From Quiz Werewolves With Depression

Answer: Cheeroonear

The arms of this beast were said to be longer than its entire body, and so would drag along behind it as it went from town to town, draining water pools and eating local children. Cheeroonear also had command of a pack of vicious dogs, which were eventually killed, as was their master, by hunters whom they had previously threatened.

16. Which character of Roman myth, whose story is an allegory for the life of a butterfly, has a name which means "butterfly"?

From Quiz Fluttering by a Folktale

Answer: Psyche

Psyche was a beautiful maiden whom Cupid fell in love with after striking himself with his own arrow. The two married, but Cupid hid himself from sight so that his mother, Venus, would not find out about the marriage, as she hated Psyche. The links between the life of a butterfly and Psyche are the emptiness in Psyche's life before marriage (caterpillar stage), Psyche's grief after losing her husband (chrysalis stage), and finally regaining her husband and becoming immortal (emergence from chrysalis into her new life). For more information on the story of Psyche, please take my quiz "Psyche - the Second Curious Woman".

17. Which creature of Greek myth was bitten by a gadfly after flying too close to the heavens?

From Quiz Not Birds, Not Planes, Just Flies in Mythology!

Answer: Pegasus

Although Pegasus was bitten, this was only intended as punishment for Bellerophon, who had become too proud of his achievements. Once bitten, Pegasus threw Bellerophon and his fall caused him to become blind and lame. Although a great warrior himself, many of Bellerophon's conquests were successful due the winged horse, Pegasus. Pegasus was born from the blood of Medusa. The golden bridle given to Bellerophon by Athena allowed him to ride Pegasus. Together, they defeated the Chimera - a challenge set by King Iobates.

18. Using a bee as her messenger, a dryad of Greek myth told Rhoecus of her love. What was the reason for this love?

From Quiz Stinging Tales From Around the Globe

Answer: Rhoecus demanded it

It was said that dryads (wood nymphs) perished with the trees, and so this particular dryad's life was saved by Rhoecus, who ordered his men to prop up a dying oak. The dryad told Rhoecus that she would grant him one request. He boldly requested her love. She told him that she would send a bee as her messenger to tell him when she was ready to embrace him. However, Rhoecus forgot about the bee's significance and brushed it away when it did appear. This ignorance was then punished by the dryad, who blinded Rhoecus.

19. What is a zombie alleged to be?

From Quiz The Zombie In Folklore

Answer: A re-animated corpse

According to folklore a zombie is a corpse re-animated by a sorcerer, either by use of a spell or a potion. Whilst giving the appearance of life it is still dead, and has no reason or intellect. Villagers lived in dread of zombies, and of being turned into zombies.
