As for Strappi, he pretends to be a corporal although he is really a captain so that he can spy on the regiment and Jackrum. Froc is really the General in charge of the army.

The cover illustration on the British edition of the book was done by Paul Kidby and parodies the historic photograph "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" which depicts the United States Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
